I live on my boat and just recently my hull seems to be making a crackling noise, I hear it at night when its really quiet and it sounds like Snap, Crackle & pop, Rice Crispies!!!!. It semms to be coming from the hull and deck, but its hard to tell. What on earth could it be... This is my first boat so I do not know if it is normal. The yacht is 11 years old and kept on a mooring year round.
Any ideas???

Cheers...

RELAX. Depends where you are but in most places the sea is ALIVE. There are all kinds of small critters out there taking advantage of the presence of your hull which amplifies the noises they make.

I was wondering what this noise was once and searched all over the boat wondering what it was. I couldonly hear it inside and not outside at all. I peared over the side with a torch and the tide was low and water crystal clear and there were hudndred of little crabs busily snapping at everything and each other making the crackling sounds!!

I agree with derwood. Its the small creatures (crabs, shrimps, barnacles (oh no) and fish who nibble around the hull. Again no worries.......
OR IS IT WATER SEEPING IN THE HULL DILUTING THE POLYESTER (WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN EPOXY INTHE FIRST PLACE) RIPPING OF THE BOND BETWEEN THE RESIN AND THE GLASS PREPARING THE BOAT FOR ITS COLD JOURNEY TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, TAKING WITH IT THE SCARED CREW, SKIPPER AND ALL THE OTHER RATS ON BOARD? :((((((
Naw. Its harmless.

Are you berthed anywhere near commercial shipping? My marina is near (several hundred yards) to where ships turn round. The sound of their bow thrusters cannot be heard on deck, but below, the sound transmitted through the water and through the hull is quite dramatic!

Yes, first time I heard it it sounded like something bubbling and burning and I virtually tore the boat apart trying to locate the source.

It was on 09/08/2000 @ 22.00 @ 46°41.468N 02°18.669W, just off Les Vieilles on Ile d'Yeu.

The general consensus was that it was the local crustacea having a party - if you listen it is most noticeable at tidal stands.

I'd put money on it being mullet, particularly if you have small barnacles or mussels growing on your hull.

I've been spearfishing for them in the Exe and they congregate below many of the boats and feed there.

Charles you don't think there's a teensy weensy bit too much detail here do you. The date, time and lat long of when you heard it might be going a bit too far? Back in the summer in France would probably have done just as well.

Oh and by the way I reckon it's the noise of LJS's spear gun arrows thudding into the hull as he misses yet another fish. Blind as a bat he is in one eye of course and in the other eye he's drunk.
