My small sailing club has organised a cruise to Charlestown this weekend (14/15 June) however there is a single fee for opening the lock of £25 eaach time you need it. Had a good number of boats been going in and out (Sat even / Sun morning) then this would not have been a problem but at the moment we only have 3 going in on Sat and I am the only one coming out on Sun. I am therefore less than keen to go based upon the costs involved. If however anybody else was interested in visiting this unusual harbour rather than the over rated and over priced Fowey harbour near by then please contact me and we could perhaps have an impromptu Westcountry get together.

I'm afraid it's a bit far for me, but tell me dose the £25.00 include your mooring charge and everything else? most places I have seen with a lock don't charge, why put people off at the gate when you can take much more money inside...

The locking charge is in addition to berthing charges, pity because I would like to visit but just cost too much

Is this place still owned / operated by Square Sail / Robin Davies? - If so that would explain it.

Re: It\'s A Small World

We were in Charles town last week. Noticed that there were two yachts in the inner harbour. Was it you that got strung up when they decided to open the sluice and let a bit of water out!!

Not me, didn't go due to cost. Pity but not paying locking fees and mooring charges to be on my own.

Agree with you, much to much to pay for a night, and Fowey can be too busy for some
peoples taste.
We prefer to anchor in St Austell bay off Polkerris if conditions permit, most of the
time you will be the only boat there.
Another good point is there is a pub almost on the beach, though the name of it escapes me at the moment. Not being a drinking man, Hic.

Yep. Far as I know, it's still owned by Square Sails. It's a private harbour. I did not even know you could stay there. Not surprised they charge for using the lock though. Tied up in the outer harbour a couple of times. It must be more trouble than it's worth.

Me and LJS just spent four days down there. Looked in to every nook and cranny all the way from Plymouth to Falmouth and Helford.
