I'm just back from Menorca and here's a quick write up of the trip, done on the plane . Mostly pics rahter than words. Beautiful place!

Saturday (27 June) was windy so I just did the 50mile run from Antibes to Porquerolles (an island off the coast of S France, near Toulon), anchored there for the night and topped up with fuel. Sunday’s weather was much better, as predicted. This Golfe du Lion is an awkward bit of water to cross, prone to strong winds and confused seas, but the wind was as forecast - F3 in the morning for a few hours then dropping off to F2, so I could easily do the crossing to Mahon in one go, without the need to go around the sides. So, one waypoint, 205nm, and we set off at 18kts. Here’s the route. (Antibes is roughly where the V of "NAV" is, top right of chart)

And here were the sea conditions.

It was just flat sea the whole way and strangely quiet. We saw a fishing boat 5 miles off France and then nothing till we got to Mahon. Not a single boat, in 205nm. However we saw lots of dolphins, in 3 pods, then this beautiful whale. Dunno what species – anyone know? It was about 60nm NNE of Mahon, in a depth of 2500m. We stopped and he/she swam aroubnd us taking in lots of air. Only about 50m from the boat.

Finally landfall Mahon, Sunday evening.

Fairline Menorca arranged this fab berth, thanks guys, next to Marmalade of Manchester. The berths are along the harbour edge, no marina as such, facing passing ships

GSkip, sorry not to catch up. I saw you talking to lots of people sorting out Mr BlueSky, then I was away from the boat when you dropped by. See you Thursday or Friday – I’m back in London now but flying back Thursday

Then Monday we sailed out of Mahon (first pic below) and cruised some lovely calas N coast of Menorca. All beautiful, and very quiet compared with S of F, and sea glossy flat. By about 6pm the few boats that were out and about cleared off and we had the calas to ourselves. We went to Pudenta, and a rocky cala just N of it. In most places you could take the tender ashore to a beach – no “no entry” buoys like Cote D’Azur

Today we nipped along the N coast, a slight chop on the sea now...
LoResIMG_3710.jpg

...and arrived in Pregonda, middle of N coast, a cala with a couple of beaches you can tender to

Then coming back to Mahon again today (Tuesday), eastbound along the N coast of Menorca, we passed the scouts (I think)

and finally entering Mahon harbour again, about 6.30 this evening

Beautiful place eh?. More later!

Wow - what a fabulous post! That's really brightened up what has been a grotty end to my day at work. Sometimes wish I'd left my boat out in the Balearics - especially when I see the weather that you have enjoyed there.

Thanks for sharing - I know how much work must have gone into posting all of those images.

what great pictures - that was some trip across to Menorca, perfect seas by the look of it. Hope the rest of the time in Menorca has the same weather for you, you wont want to leave!

From my Bloc Marine, it looks like Rorqual Commun (Balaenoptera physalus). Grows up to 25m long. I tried to scan the page, but can't unless I tear it out. As I said in a recent post, saw one once mid-way between Nice and Corsica.

Great Write up and pics!

Got to say I have never done France to Menorca, only Barcelona to Menorca in one go...although my boat was more your tender size!

Menorca still my Favourite Island and the Calas are amazing. Still some where you can tender ashore which is nice. Spent many a summer in the Late 80's/early 90's there and took our boats down for Summer 2001 and 2002. Hopefully looking at cruising it again next year!

Lots more pics of your adventures...please!

Cheers

When I looked it up I came to the same conclusion - a Fin Whale ... but must be a very young one ?

Loved the post. Only been to Menorca once - for a non-boaty holiday - but lots of very happy memories from your pics of Mahon seafront.

superb. I just turned a nice shade of green.

How's the designs of the flybridge windscreen coming on? Saw a Shearwater rib when we were in Island Harbour this weekend and thought the windscreen design would be great for your needs... Stupidly I didn't take a picture , had a quick look on their website and the rib they have photographed has a slightly more complicated screen design, but I will see if I can track a photo down....

..although by the looks of it you didn't need a windscreen on this trip!

It takes a lot of courage to anchor as close as that /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Tremendous report, thanks for sharing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Worth reading up on Whales, could be a young one waiting at the surface while mum dives 1 mile or so down to meet dad, who dives several miles down bringing food (squid) almost to the surface (1/2 to 1 mile deep).
Usually take a rest in the day and can be seen together.
( I am not a whale expert just know a snippet about Pilot whales, as they look a bit like yours I assume they have similar habits but could be wrong)

Thnaks everyone for the replies and especially the whale info. Fatlady I have blocmarine on board but didn't think to look there - will do. Really impressive creatures when you have a close encounter. MustangTom, I didn't see 2500m on my depthsounder: the ole Raymarine gives up at about 100m. I got the 2500m figure off the chart!
Mjf, the berth is a bit "doggy". Speed limit is officially 3kts but everyone does 5, and the odd small RIB flies past at 20, and the wakes can be felt on the boat. But otherwise ok, and very pleasant ambience really.

MartynK yes I could be persuaded to stay there. And the Monarch flight last night was sheer luxury. I've praised Easyjet on here many times, mainly cos they are so much better than Ryanair. But Monarch are streets ahead of Easyjet in terms of comfort and much more civilised boarding (pre alloc seats, so no scrum/scramble by passengers to get nice seats) and still only £40-60 fare

EME, your u/w lights are fantastic in these shallow Calas. Instead of just lighting up the water as we have seen in deep SofF, they light up the whole seabed with sand and soft coral. Fantastic!

Firefly, the windscreen job is coming on. It's a slow burn project becuase I dont want to interfere with summer cruising. I have on board the boat the machined "Toblerone" plastic sections, milled from nylon ingot, and I'll fit these next then make the template for the actual screen perspex. (The Toblerones are to alter the angle of the screen - Fairline have it raked back 45deg but I want it more vertical). The Toblerones are stiffer than I expected so I need to warm them to make them curve to the dashboard shape, and they wont fit in oven so it's an afternoon sun + heatgun job. Then poster Nick-H has offered use of his CNC bender to make the curved s/s tube surround, which is curved in 2 planes. More later!

I'll post more pics next week after a bit more menorca cruising and then crossing to Majorca/Palma

Fantastic post, any day's a good day when you see whales or dolphins, so even better to see both and end up somewhere as lovely as Menorca.

I should get time to post my Corsica photos next week

Ah yes the lights.

If you are lucky you might get to see lobsters etc on the march in these waters.

Some years ago a favourate trick of mine was to shine a high powered beam into the water and you could see the 'fellas' walking across the bottom. Seem to recall the light freezes them and the eye reflect back at you.

Pass the snorkel please
