Weed in Markermeer

Sas van Edam is a good spot to lay alongside

We have used the YC a couple of times. They were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

The cheese is good too. Absolutely nothing like the muck sold in this country. The Captain's house museum is interesting too, with its famous floating cellar, though the portrait of the dead baby might not be to everyone's taste.

We went to the smaller marina on the west side next to the castle. Very helpful HM. Very good showers. We handed over a red ensign as they only had a Union Jack to put up when British boats were visiting.

I called in there for one night about three weeks ago, your ensign was duly hoisted!

As regards to the weed, I had to move about in the area Marken/Muiden/Amsterdam and got caught four times in two days. I was able to go astern under power and clear it each time but have heard tales from local harbourmasters of yachts having to be towed in after being completely disabled.

My only suggestion is to stay as much as possible in the buoyed channels where the commercial traffic runs; these seem to be free of weed.

Yes, there's nothing that concentrates the mind more than looking behind and seeing an almost submerged barge approaching at speed. You're probably right, though.

I was chatting to a local at Muiderzand who said the weed will be a problem for the next 10 years. Apparently its part of the evolution of the lake bed and will eventually be crowded out by other growth.

Thanks for nothing. I'll be nearly 90 by then.
