It's emergency equipment, not a replacement for carrying enough potable water.

Probably couldn't operate it in a liferaft, but it would keep you going if eg your water tank burst mid-passage.

Yeah and don't discount the morale factor of doing something to help yourself. I reckon that's an important factor in long distance sailing. ?
