Are they easy and cheap to set up with streaming facility? Where would be the best place to look?

What are you intending on doing with the web cam??

Our YC has a webcam facility that allows a view over the pontoons, however it only updates every 30 seconds. There is also a very good web cam that covers the Panama Canal have a look at http://www.pancanal.com/eng/photo/camera-java.html

very easy to setup and costs about £40 inc camera and software.
All you do is plug in the camera install the software then tell everyone your IP address and what port the camera software is using and that's it. You'll need firewall software for security and enable the spicific port (Port 80 I think) within the firewall software so others can access it. From start to finishg should take no more than half hour.
The best way is to set up as above then create a web page which connects to the PC with the camera fitted (port 80 me thinks), that way all you need to give out is the URL.

That sounds easy, but what is the quality like for £40?

Well for instance........purely hypothetical of course.........expressions can replace a thousand words!

A fly on the wall for example.

More important is the bandwidth. You can obviously spend a lot more with the use of a codex and data compression, it all depends on what you want. If it's live quality video, you have to worry about streaming and stuff, if it's just an update every few minutes £40 is enough. If it's live the quality will generally be crap because you have to consider multiple connections which means high bandwidth.
I'm not by any means an expert so may be talking b*ll*cks, just played around with it a couple of years ago.

What is it you are trying to achieve?

Fly on the wall???

Surely that would potentially constitute an invasion of privacy? If being used as potential evidence would it be allowed? If being used as a wind up would the individual find it funny...being watched by any number of individuals?

What about unauthorised attendance could it not be used for that?

How do you work out whose privacy has been invaded then? If an Inspector is called to the scene could it not be used for identity?

Well, it could be used to track unauthorised attendance I guess, but you have to consider the potential problems of invasion of privacy. Face it you would need to be a wizard to sort that type of problem out in the courts!

Re: Invasion of Privacy

AFAIK Businesses are governed by the data protection laws which require me to advertise the fact that my premisies are covered by CCTV. If i wanted to set up a camera to get evidence of a specific criminal activity... staff nicking, that would be OK. No need to put a sign up in the stock room saying you are being videoed.

At home AFAIK data protection goes out the window. But an individual could try and claim invasion of privacy if approp.

So a camera over looking just your garden to prove next doors kids are nicking your apples would be Ok.

But to watch their older sister sun bathe..... not OK.

I guess it's a grey area really.

Could sound also be set up with the webcam? Is the sound quality such with the cheaper end that it’s not worth thinking about? I wouldn’t like a muffled ear to the knackered speaker type quality. Would I be able to pick up different accents and tones brilliantly clearly?

Also not quite sure on the IP for webcams, is it the same as my computer or is it given a different IP address? Can I be hacked easily by having a webcam connected to the web?
