Weather reports when returning to Poole from Cherbourg.

Harbour master's office?

IIRC, the Cherbourg Harbour has a set of current weather reports sellotaped to the glass just to the right of the main door....

Failing that, find an internet cafe in town...

or listen to the appropriate VHF channel for a VHF transmission....

Sellotape long gone.
They have a superb screen presentation in the HM building.
You wont get UK Coastguard VHF in Cherburg of course.
I always take a long wave portable so I can get UK shipping forecasts on 198KHz.

If you have a WiFi laptop Cherbourg has excellent WiFi access and even allows you to view Meteo France and Meteo Consult websites without needing to log-on to their system. Forecasts (Meteo Consult) are on a big screen in the Capitanerie too and you could listen out on VHF for their Met broadcasts from CROSS. Otherwise Radio 4 LW on 198 is in range for the UK Shipping Forecasts.

Trust the French forecast in the Capitanerie - they are usually very good. Also, be aware the 'Cherbourg howl'. This is a strange phenomenon whereby even in moderate offshore breezes the whole marina seems to be an ominous cacaphony of clanking halyards and whistling flags suggesting impossily strong winds. You'll see Brit yotties gathered around the forecast and much sucking of teeth, 'not looking good' etc

Just ignore them if the forecast looks ok, else you'll be condemned to weeks alongside. It's fine once you get out there

either paper version of the forecast. (ask behind the counter and they will give you a copy for 1E very good detail). or use the uptodate weather info on the screen that roles round (note st Vaast has one too now).

OR

walk into town and look at the meteo france weather centre they post all the infomation and charts in the window. (if you know cherb it's by the big wine cave just down from cafe de paris.

OR

If you have a good VHF set you should pick up solent CG on ch23. we can

Or

get a mate you trust to text the shipping forcast to you and current buoy data taken from the web.

Or
