im heading down around nice/cannes in june and i was wondering where the best place to get ENGLISH weather reports is, or how. i have a vhf ad a am/fm/lw radio but no navtex.
I just got back from a couple of weeks in the Med, round Corsica. The Italian military broadcast a shipping forecast for most of the Med in English and Italian continuously on VHF channel 68. Not sure what the coverage is but we were able to get it OK most of the time. You might well pick it up in the Nice area.
Navtex now seems to be the primary source of weather information in coastal waters. French weather reports on Navtex are comprehensive and accurate. The information is displayed for you, so you have no need to write down what the broadcaster is saying, often at high speed, with all the possibilities for error. Navtex sets are relatively cheap and even the cheapest ones receive glowing reports, although I would say that the Nasa Pro version is much easier to use than the standard. I would recommend very strongly that you buy one. If you are chartering/borrowing a boat you don't need to install the set, they work fine with a temporary supply of volts and the antenna lying on deck or tied to the rail.
I've just done a delivery from Antibes to S Turkey and we found it best when ashore to go to an internet cafe where for E2 you can get up to date info on www.theyr.com or www.meteo.fr
