We have the Fuel question - now Boat Values

For anyone interested - I am trying to put together a boat second-hand value sheet.

I must be stark raving bonkers to do this ..... BUT we have had various posts about second-hand values and I think its about time that some sort of table was produced. I did do one a few years ago and it was amazing .... there were some boats sold at a few thou and others of same type / model etc.sold for 3 - 4x the amount !! The sheet became unmanageable.

But I will try again.

So info required : (remember this is NOT new boats - this is Second-hand ones only ......)

Boat Model ie Bav 34
LOA
Year
Engine type / name / HP
Sail inventory if applic.
Bought UK or ?
Price or Value (please where possible indicate TOTAL price / value incl. VAT) Also NOT asking price - we are interested in PAID price .....
Fully equipped to sail on purchase or not ? (please do not give full inventory !)
Amount spent to bring to reasonable service condition if refitted etc.

Because many are sensitive about private info. etc. - I propose that all replies should be to my direct e-mail address :

nluther@solent-life.co.uk

that way no-ones publicly declares their own boat. I promise that personal ID of boat owner etc. will not be entered into the sheet.

If sufficient replies be had - the sheet will be available for anyone who wishes to have an e-mailed copy.

Coupled with the Engine Fuel survey - this could be invaluable to anyone seeking to change or buy a boat .....

Over to you lot ......

Nigel,

One hell of an undertaking, but would be hugely useful......

As a suggestion, rather than just 'fully equipped to sail', why not have a few categories of 'fully equipped for' perhaps could be: electronics, heating, gallery, safety equipment, epoxied and tender as examples.... that way you help people to define whether their definition of fully equipped is the same as some one elses

You'd be taking away all the fun of going through hundreds of boating magazines, numerous websites, brokers details and forum questions before even starting to look at boats. Nice idea. The YM series on second hand boats was OK, but the price ranges very very wide, so it would be nice to get an idea from real boats and also some ability to quantify extras.

The spread sheet will be HUGE ...

To be fair - I will have to consider what goes in /what stays out - as the list could develop into a huge affair and become unwieldy.

Inventorys are a subject that are so open to personal bias that it would need a sheet all of its own.

The main aim is to compile a realistic appraisal of whats out there ... the interpretation and expectation is up to the buyer, as each wants a different 'animal'. EG - I have a pal .... yes I do have one somewhere ... who chatted to me about buying a boat. I knew his parameters and advised a 2-3 yr old boat with good inventory and good reputation etc. Price was good, plus he mamaned to get a 'telephone' reduction on price before even seeing it ... BUT he also looked at a new boat similar size but more 'wife who likes comfort' style rather than a good all-round boat ... at a lot more money. He chose the new one ....

This gies to show that we are all not the same and have different wants .... I want a good all-round boat that sails well, reasonably comfortable and modern. He went for fluffy pillows and a large saloon .......

Do you have the time for all this? Wouldn't like to see you overwhelmed and other interests suffer.

I don\'t like being idle !!

I'm one of those who gets a kick out of helping etc. I also have pet subjects that I follow.

I own my own business and of course that takes major time and effort - but its nice to break off and do something for enjoyment ....

If I can get enough replies and derive enough data - shouldn't be too hard .... I have an old database that I did some years ago and so far - seems to be still true !!! so a combination of both may prove feasible.

We only live once ....
