Watermate Key

Local officialdom dictates that I need a 'Watermate Key' to cruise the Kennet & Avon canal.

What is it? What does it look like? What's it used for? Where do I get one?

Hmmm! it's a sort of handle that allows you to use the locks.

HONEST GUYS & GALS! I have never used one its just a bit of useless knowledge I picked up.

Yes you need a watermate key, its a standard Yale type key that the British Waterways board sell, you won't get further than Theale on the K&A without it, it opens the swingbridges and allows you to operate the road barriers and traffic lights etc.. Also opens the sanitary stations.

The lump of iron you found under the seat is a windless, these come in 2 sizes so make sure yours is 1 inch one (square)

You can usualy buy the keys and windless's at any marina on the canal or Blakes lock at the Thames entrance.
