water pump

Hi

I have drained down my drinking water simply by running all the taps dry - I have a heater on board and from experience the un heated part of the boat doesn't drop under 1 centigrade in the winter.

The problem i now have is that my water pump seems to be constantly running - i guess cos it does't have water going through it.

What have i done wrong - should i disconnect the pump or fill the tank up a bit to at least stop the pump - or is their a fault somewhere.

Remove the fuse that protects the pump (if there is one!).

dependent on how long you have left the pump running, you may well have damaged the impellor, they are not supposed to run dry for long periods.

The pump will run continuously any time the water level in the tank drops below the top of the discharge fitting in the tank. It's trying to prime, but can't because it's sucking air. Either add enough water to the tank to allow the pump to prime, or cut power to it by either turning it off at the breaker or pulling the fuse.

If it's a diaphragm pump, it's unlikely that you've damaged it unless it's been running for days. However, you haven't done it any good...sooner or later the motor will overheat if it's allowed to keep running.
