Water in engine oil - fresh (bad) or salt (still bad but less so)

I had a feeling that the holes' location was associated with the drain cock but after removing the liner could not remember its alignment so could not define that as a reason. Makes sense but had not found any reference to it when I had my issue. I put it down to the engine having had a lot of use the previous two days when it served for almost 20 hours continuous, (poor old thing:confused:)

That seems a very likely explanation. Definitely not due to cavitation, which occurs at the mid-point in the height of the liner, where amplitude is at a maximum. Also, far too localised for cavitation erosion.
