Water in Bilge, pump will not remove

Due to a sequence of mishaps my transom shower emptied my water tank into the bilge. The bilge pump came on and (I assume) shifted most of it but there is now about 3 inches under the engines. The company I bought the boat from say that the bilge pump is not allowed to be configured so that it pumps out the water from under the engines. Something to with engine oil being in it and not wanting that put in to the sea.

Firstly, is that correct?

Secondly, how do I get it out? It is clean water, no oil in it.

Is it important to get it out or can I just leave it in there?
 
Use a sponge..


1) Put the sponge into the water
2) squeeze it and let it go
3) pick it up gently
4) move it over a bucket
5) squeeze all the liquid out

repeat until dry.

AFAIK It isn't "not allowed" rather "not good practice" to pump from the engine bilge straight over the side
 
Sponge, as above. Or you can get 12v or battery operated pumps that will shift most of whats left. Swindlers have em £20 ish

I have a Gobbi 345 and my stern shower did the same. If your 315 has as tight an engine compartment as mine the sponge and bucket would be far from easy.

I used a long handled mop and then wrung it out in bucket. You can get to every part of the bilge under the engine and no effort at all.

The pela pump is very good if you are mechanically minded eg.oil servicing etc..but for soakage of any fluid ,buy the cheapest,biggest,baby nappies/diapers you can get.........unreal what they can absorb!
 
The oil thing is to prevent an auot bilge pump pumping an oil spill over the side.

It's probably not important but I don't like the idea of leaving water in the bilges as it increases humidity in the boat especially when all the hatches are closed. This may result in mould, increased risk of corrosion and possible damage to electronics.
 
I have auto and manual suctions in the E/R as well as Laz and under main cabin sole etc.

Think this is entirely normal. (2003 boat BTW)


In my view the one place most likey to get serious water ingress is via cooling water hoses / pipes etc in and around engine(s) thus essential to have means for pumping out / reduce risk of flooding.

For the issue that you describe i would use a siphon thing into a bucket and chuckit
 
Our Nimbus is 2005 build - purchased 2006. We've had the same problem - water in the bilge. Could not fathom how it got in there. Had the following from the after sales manager: "In rough conditions water can come in through the engine bay air intake boxes."

No we do not have 'auto' suction to get rid of it - entirely agree we should do. Just got manual. But how are we expected to know when water gets in the engine bay?
 
Did this thread disappear because I tried to find it to read your replies but I could not until today.

Anyway thanks for the advice I think I will resort to the sponge / nappies method.

Gary D: did you get a replacement shower head easily enough? I have one on order but I can't be sure it is the right one until it arrives.
