Following a serious flooding, the beautiful oak-faced ply bulkheads and furniture on my Dean cat need urgent treatment. Particularly, the lower edges of the panels show black stains creeping up the grain from the damp fixed floor carpetting.
As soon as possible after the event, I used detergents, a Karcher (on spray) and a wet-and -dry vac, to clean the carpet, but now would appreciate any ideas to limit the dreaded black stain menace. Is there some product or magic potion which one can apply?
Cheers...R

Oxalic acid? Is that the stuff in coca cola, or is it the rust neutraliser? Did you ever use it on end grain wood?. The one removable item, the central cabin table, shows signs of a black mould forming where it has lived next to the carpet on the cabin floor. I can do a test there. Cheers R

Wood bleach. You can get it from any good wood supplier. It's a two part application and you must follow the instructions carefully for the best results. Before you can use it you must ensure you have removed all varnish from the surface you wish to treat.

Regards.

Peter.

Hey, thanks people. That's two suggestions. I'm stuck on Paros in the Aegean and the boat is in a yard after we hit a rock. I have to do something about the wood before I leave at the end of the month so I'll see if someone here has one or other or both. Problem is I can't take up the carpet....so locally round the bottom of the panels, it's going to get the same treatment as the wood.....whatever, thanks for those suggestions.
Cheers....R

Re: Coke has ...

Ah, now, I've got a bottle of phosphoric acid on board used for pasivating car bodywork before spraying (I don't know why I have it on board other than that catamarans seem to absorb forgotten junk better than monohulls). Do you think that would inhibit the black spoors where the wood sits on the carpet, if I sprayed a weak solution along the bottom of the panels?

Black staining

My boat suffered water ingress last winter and the 'tide-mark' is clearly visible in the cabin. I have tried all sorts but eventually I will have to strip the varnish and sort it out.

I think really the only way is de-varnish, sand and recoat ... obviously with a bit of bleaching here and there to try and get base colour back again.

If you have carpet fitted close up that doesn't lift - I would sort out a way to solve that - I wouldn't want permanent carpet anywhere on a boat. My carpet is hessian backed stiff - but cut to fit which lifts out in one piece for each cabin, allowing access to bilges etc.

Re: Error !!!!

You were right first time; CocaCola does have phosphoric acid in it, albeit in a very dilute solution. that's one of the main reasons it's so bad for your teeth! But like you say, good for cleaning metal, useless for wood renovation.

cheers,
david

Re: Error !!!!

I thought it was Phenolic ...... which is a nerve agent. Used in aspirin and other medicaments.
When the good doctor in US formulated Coke - it was supposed to douse the headche of the hangover ..... I always assumed he used phenol for that reason ?

Maybe I'm wrong ........ must read the side of the can sometime !!!!
