Was I nasty?

"Had anyone ever had grieg from the big solent racers such as the Swan 45's, Farr 45's etc or do people generally find it to be the smaller "back of the fleet" racers "

Stellagirl, in my experience grief comes from two directions. Firstly, back in the fleet racers who are not good enough to be at the front. Those who are at the front know enough to steer clear of unpredictable gnarly old cruisers who are more concerned with getting the Fray Bentos crispy than steering a constant course. Secondly, one design fleets, who are usually all going in the same direction at the same speed (more or less) and get upset if they have to give away even a centimetre compared with their competitors. This latter applies particularly to the Cowes day boat classes.

Re: Oi!!!!

It's alright us raggies can have a quick punch up, then we'll start a thread about Mobo's and everyone will unite in mobo bashing.

Strangely enough still haven't had a bad word to say about those stinky fellows yet this year?!?! Is it possible that we're all getting along just nicely this year?

Thats how I see it - which is why I asked what people thought. When racing I find we have more problems from back of the fleet racers than anyone else and have only come to grief with a cruiser once (who was in the right, panicked and tried to tack out the way, ended up on port, when we would have passed ahead -- albeit quite close)

Can't say what boat it was but it was a larger yacht with a race crew (all with bleached hair and sunglasses on their heads). It was a couple of years ago now, we were making steady progress heading West on the south side of the Solent, near Osbourne Bay. We had admired several other yachts that were tacking up the Solent, then I noticed one that was going to become a collision danger, I watched as our tracks closed, he was on port I was on Stbd. As he got closer it was obvious he was going to stand on. So I tacked to avoid the enevitable. I then tacked again to put us back on course, but he then tacked as well, he had put himself on a direct collision course with us!

So in an effort to preserve ourselves I had to take avoiding action and hove too as we had little way on and were unable to tack. As they sailed past within feet of us there was no thanks no recognition. Bar stewards! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

No, not at all. Consider you have done him a great favour, if she/he bothers to analyse what happened. Hopefully he/she will keep out of the way in future. He/she put them in the position they got into, not you. They wouldn't try it on with a big maxi!

Again, I'm wondering if it had just been my girlfriend on the helm with an inexperienced crew

I believe that's the done thing these days. Then just nip below for a bit, not too many rocks around here. Your nice new boat will be fine....
