Any suggestions for places twixt Teddington n Henley. It may be worth bearing in mind that I do own a tie but it has held my trousers up since time beyond memory.
Places to avoid are most welcome and which moorings to avoid due to local scallywags. Thanks in advance.

Hi, at Cookham there is the Ferry, Havester type place + has moorings - well two !
Further up is the Bounty at Bourne End, just raft up.

Then the showboat at Harleyford Marina

Then past Temple lock the Flower pot has a pontoon, just walk up the lane about 5 mins walk.

Marlow Town Centre loads of places as has Henley

When you visiting ?

Peter

You should definitely try the Brasserie at Bray Marina. Great location on the riverside, very good food and a discount if you are based with MDL.

Many good places to eat in both Marlow and Henley - you can pretty much make your choice.

Well Fred......youre beginning to make it sound as if you expect this forthcoming little foray of yours to be a real 'walk on the wild side' !

Once you've left the isolation and glumness of the mudway delta and start heading up the great river you will be entranced. I suppose you could say the adventure really starts once you pass under the majestic QEII bridge at Dartford and begin approaching the metropolis. No hanging around though cos you ned to get into Limehouse (nice, not very expensive and a superb chinese in the commercial road a few minutes walk away - theres two on either side of an indian and its the one on the right you want....turn right at traffic lights and on north side of road) or St.Kats (fun, busy, lots of tourists to admire your bathtub but much more pricey and less locking friendly times).

Leave whichever on the rising tide and you will be at Teddington within 3 hours after a really fun experience dodging the river traffic between Tower and Vauhall bridges. The rather nice olde worlde building on the right with the big clock tower is quite interesting and very historical I'm told but you cant stop there and you cant stop anywhere else really either on this part of the river so just go for it and anticipate the delights which await you on the non tidal stretch above Teddington.

Theres so many places to stop and eat but a good starting point would be the moorings alongside Hampton Court Palace (free for first night). A gentle walk along the towpath will take you into East Molesey just over the bridge with loads of eateries wide choice/prices. A days run from there will take you thru Sunbury (Forbsie knows a good pub there - liked it so much he tried to steal the pontoon when he left....not sure he was aware he was leaving but thats another story !) and on thru Walton, Shepperton, Chertsey (thats my patch so let me know when youre coming!) and on thru Staines to Windsor where you can moor up in all sorts of places. Easiest prob on south bank below railway bridge but also on north bank on Eton fields and walk over bridge into town. Loads of eateries.

Thats enough for you to digest for now but........come to think of it I dont think Ive ever worn a tie when eating out on the river and although Ive heard the odd tale about aggro Ive never witnessed or experienced any apart from too much noise on occasion.

Will try and post episode 2 later

The food at Waterside (Bray Marina) is good but seriously expensive - when I was moored at Bray even the owners of £250k+ boats wouldn`t use it. Harvester ( directly after Cookam lock - opp DB Marine) is reasonable fare a la Harvester. If you want a more relaxed break try The Bounty ( opp Bourne End Marina) free overnight mooring, good pub grub but watch out for the Stella ! The toilets are outside of the main pub and are open all night

Re: Wanted recommendations for Thames drinks/eats

Most of the places below are mentioned in the Thames book, however having spent most of my boating life on the Thames here are some my recommendations.

RHS 500M before Sunbury lock there is a large green where you can overnight, shallow in places though. There is the best Chinese in the area The Blue Dragon very easy walking.

The Church Square at Shepperton. Take the old river course 500M upstream of Walton Bridge, dont go up the Desborough Cut. Just past the manor house RHS is a large pontoon Good mooring and you have Kings Head and The Anchor, Bluebekkers, Edwins, Warren Lodge, spoilt for choice. Easy walking to Shepperton to the "School of Spice" Indian. Just before Manor House excellent overnight mooring also.

Or just through Shepperton lock on rhs excellent mooring and the Thames Court. Good food.

About mile and 1/2 up stream of Chertsey lock on rhs is a good deep water overnight mooring just past Laleham park, you have to walk about 1/4 mile up the lane then turn right, The Three Horseshoes worthwhile excellent food.

The Runnymead Hotel on lhs before Bellweir lock. At the most rhs of the hotel is good bar and food. Worth ringing and booking their mooring.

Nothing then till after Windsor - too touristy and busy. Full of England fans weeping and moaning.
However, the mooring on lhs outside the swimming pool just before the bridge is good and you can all have a swim and showers!

Monkey island at Bray, excellent restraunt - expensive but fantastic. You could stay at Bray Marina and walk up the tow path to it.

The Boulters Inn at Maidenhead moor right outside excellent bar and restraunt. May have to book the mooring though

Overnight on one of the Islands at Cliveden and have a barbie, then walk up to cliveden house, fantastic house and gardens.

LHS just through Cookham bridge good mooring and there is the Ferry Boat Inn.

Moor on lhs just before Mapledurham lock small pontoon and walk up the lane to the Flower Pot, excellent food and beer garden off the beaten track.

have a great trip.
