Wallasea island and the RSPB

Flocculation, look it up.

In a very short time, geologically speaking, all that Essex clay that makes our rivers the muddy colour we love, would settle out. We would soon have a swamp rather than a lagoon and in time a marsh. And the birders would love it :-). Better than the "Theme Park" on the Crouch :-)

So be careful what you wish for chaps...

Rapid tidal flow is all that keeps the rivers clear, and even that only up to a point. Cardiff? Not a lot of clay maybe.

PS

Yes, Wiggy sold the Heard 28, somebody got an absolute bargain there. I'd have bought her myself but she wasn't what we need

Geologically speaking, a short time is what? 10,000 years? That's more the blink of an eye. More like 100,000 years.

So we should not protect peoples homes from flooding because in the next 100,000 years the freshwater area upstream of the flood defence would silt up? Nothing to worry about them as long as we have a half finished artifical wetland?

I think Steve is probably right and a barrage across the Blackwater would result in silting up very quickly. Within a few decades rather than geological timescales

Tens to hundreds I would think. I also think you will find the 'theme park' is finished and now entering the process of maturation and colonisation. It is also wrong to refer to it as artificial imhp, rather, it is an attempt at restoration. Interesting that you make no comment on your claim regarding "the only grade one land in Essex", sorry but you really need to check facts before posting. I am curious to learn what you have against nature reserve? Have you had a horrible experiance on one? Been attacked by a wader? Harassed by a Marsh Harrier?

And I agree, we should not spend money protecting homes that should never have been built. Why should our tax money contribute to the wealth of feckless property developers and foolish house purchasers? Any development in high flood risk areas should be demolished and replaced with 'theme parks', the cost of doing so should be recovered from the complicit politicos, foolish purchasers and greedy developers. All property over 50 years would be protected as I guess back then they knew no better. :-)

Wallasey is far from finished. They didn't even, in the end, get all the material from Crossrail that they expected and that was only ever going to be half of what they needed

Last I heard, they have no idea where the material will come from to finish the job

The excavated material at the Northern Line Extension is largely going downriver by barge so it does seem odd that hasn't also ended up at Wallasea

I can't vouch for the veracity of the rumour I heard but someone who was working on the wallasey project claimed that the value commercial value of the material was more than expected and effectively the RSPB were outbid
