Hi - My Swmbo and I visited MDL's Woolverstone Marina near Ipswich on Saturday afternoon as we fancy a change of scenery - All looked very nice and spoke to the staff at the time who said there is a waiting list.
My Question is - Is this now a marina sales tactic to try and get you to sign up for the next season or due to the outbreak of covid and lockdown last year boat sales rose and spaces are at a premium.?
I will point out that the chaps at the marina was in no way pushing - I am just curious because if because of boat sale rising surely the marinas would if possible extend more boats more ££££.

I bought my first boat this year, a T40 which is just under 13m. I did my training at Shamrock Quay (in Southampton) and wanted to base it in the Solent. I contacted MDL and seem to recall they had at least 2 or 3 spaces available at most of their Solent marinas. I guess if you have a longer boat this would affect availability?

Further, my boat was sold with a berth included at Bucklers Hard Marina (which I didn't want at all). I was told there is a waiting list of well over a year to get in there so out of curiosity I sent an enquiry and it turned out to be rubbish as they had immediate availability.

I know from looking at the status board through the manager's office window that our marina has all but four of its berths let on annual contracts and the remaining four on monthlys.

It could be some marinas are more popular than others. So the others have lower occupancy than last year .
There appear to be more than usual empty spaces where I keep my boat - two such spaces near my boat I know are not occupied . A nearby marina extended and I know some have gone there. Other boats have sold and have been taken elsewhere .

You must own Richards boat , I won’t type the name .
I looked after the oily bits for a few years , great boat .

I'm on waiting lists at two marinas currently, have been for months (fortunately I have a berth, just wanting to try a new boating location).

Let's hope that MDL doesn't decide to revert to its infamous 'till the pips squeak' pricing strategy of old.

Where were these boats before though?

It's an interesting question, and one I often ask in reverse. I look at Southampton Boat Show every year, an entire (temporary) marina choc full of brand new boats, with a load more on the hardstanding. And every year I think 'but where are they all going to go? There are no new marinas.'

To which the answer is partly abroad of course, but the exact same applies to Dusseldorf, Cannes, Palma and many many others.

And that's before you factor that Princess (for example) may exhibit 10 boats at the Southampton Boat Show, but build 250 that year! All the rest are equally just a small percentage of the amount being turned out.

Long answer, but maybe that's where the boats were before - being built and being sold.

The answer is to get rid of raggies

Around the UK, especially the Solent, that's already happening, the proportion of MoBos is on a steady upward trend. However, there is an issue with this in that for a given length MoBos tend to be somewhat wider that their wind propelled sisters and marina berths have generally been designed for the proportions of the latter.

But you don’t spend on fuel , and when they say fuel at cost , yes whatever.
