WAAS

Not consistently (Egnos by the way, WAAS only covers US). They are still in testing and the live date has been put back yet again - they now say Mid 2005, but they've moved it so often you'd better take that with a pinch of salt

Confused

I have a Garmin GPS (which is new and untried) and the manual goes on abou t enabling/disabling WAAS. Are you saying that it may be WAAS over there -but it will receive Egnos over here?

When my new Raymarine handheld RC400 plotter kept loosing a fix even in the cockpit the tech support department in Gosport told me (1 month ago) to disable the differential GPS option because the patchy Egnos coverage was confusing the device.

Re: Confused

Yes - Waas was originally used on menus/manuals as that was the only system. Egnos is compatible with Waas receivers, so once Egnos is up and running, you can enable 'Waas' on your GPS, and accuracy will go from about 15+ metres to about 3 metres (about 95% of the time)to 7 metres.

It's probably best not to turn it on until the system is fully live though.

Yeah, when it works it's good, but when it's bad it's horrid. They kept switching satellites in and out of service during testing, so may have caused some problems. However, they were supposed to have been in final testing stages now, so would have thought it would have been giving fairly reliable results by now.

Has your plotter been keeping a fix after turning differential off?

I have been monitoring EGNOS when available with software which provides a "survey" plot. So far the plots with EGNOS being utilised have on most occasions been less stable than one's achieved with EGNOS off! This could be why it is not in service yet. Plots utilising land based differential stations are very stable indeed so I am beginning to wonder if I will ever use EGNOS.

EGNOS and WAAS are both regional implementations of SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation Systems), as is MSAS in Japan.

EGNOS is still in the test phase and should be available for non safety-of-life applications this year, though as Brendan says god knows when exactly. In the meantime don't enable it except to have a look as it can degrade performance.

WAAS (North American regional implementation) is fully operational.

It is now better at keeping a fix but still drops out at times. I have to admit I have not yet mounted the cradle at the helm and according to Raymarine the antenna is in the top corner of the RC400. So there is hope for more reliable GPS reception once the device is oriented correctly.

In fairness to Raymarine I should mention my GPS is a grey import purchased on impulse in Seattle. Not sure if this is relevant to my woes.
