Currently rebuilding a 290 Outdrive clutch unit and had a sharp intake of breath when told the price of the oil.
Volvo call for a Synthetic ATF oil to be used in the 290 Outdrive, and the Volvo transmission oil is an arm and a leg would any Synthetic gear oil be acceptable and which quality would I use if there is a suitable alternative. or are all synthetic oils expensive?

Try here for reasonably priced oil. You don't have to use the Volvo stuff, although I'm sure they will say there is some special marine additive in there. Any synthetic gear oil of the the same viscosity rating will be ok, its 75/90 I think.

yes indeed I asked this very question of some local marine engineers and of Volvo - it appears that there is a special ISA number for the Volvo stuff (according to general websites on oils not from volvo) this stops various parts of the leg from going rusty in salt water conditions .... I was advised by several independant engineers that I should not use standard oil as in the long run it would mean new parts and worn parts - so I opted for the pukku stuff just to be on the safe side ...

Got it from d.b.marine at quite a reasonable price not a lot dearer than the non certified stuff actually about £5 in it for both legs so no point in scrimping ....

At the end of the day a fully synthetic 75/90 GL5 oil is exactly what it states, there is no marine special oil, although the 'experts' will be along shortly to correct me, but I know who is correct.
Try CPL Petroleum, 25 litres for 77.55 + vat.

Exactly, i've heard the thing about the seawater protection additive, but I thought water was not supposed to be in the drive anyway.
