Got it off OK then !

Arghh!

I figured it out, then tried to delete my post before I wasted any ones time:

It probably sounds crazy, but everything I have read about these engines indicates that run forever but if they ever have an issue it will be the water pump. I'm committed to keeping the boat for 5 plus years, so I thought I may as well replace the water pump now, and then carry the old as a spare. I'm going to do the same with the thermostat.

Glad my first attempt was on the office floor, that was difficult enough, without being on a moving boat.

The pump that you may have trouble with (leaking seal) is the fresh water circulator pump. Keep a check on it by wiggling for slop at the pulley. Try not to tighten the belt too hard as this puts a side strain on the pump bearings. New & re-built pumps are readily available. This is a Jap. Ishibaura 106-10 engine & is used in many small land machines as well as the Perkins M30. Shop around for pump & gaskets-available at much less than VP prices. Approx $US 150.

Cheers for the link, certainly that manual has some extra info over and above the Volvo one.

One strange thing, the Perkins 100 manual has has the thermostat being located in the water pump, whereas the Volvo one has the thermostat in/behind the heat exchanger. I guess I find out which is right when I remove the HE.

I think you will find that MD2010 and 2020 engines have the thermostat in the HE.

MD2030 engines have it in the water pump

MD2040 have it in the HE but in a different position to the MD2010 and 2020

It is am sure all shown in the VP w'shop manual at http://www.bluemoment.com/downloads.html

and clearly shown in the parts diagrams at http://www.marinepartseurope.com/uk/en/volvo-penta-schematics-MarineDieselEngines.aspx
