VP D2-55 - Raw water pump - refurb or replace?

I noted a little splash of oil under the raw water pump so I thought I had best get it off to take a look behind it. I wasn't going to replace the impeller this year, as I tend to replace it every other year. Last year I'd replaced it and replaced the faceplate and impeller (the photo below is of the OLD worn faceplate).

On getting the pump off, the impeller itself is actually quite mangled on its ends (so I am very glad I took it apart).

The inside of the pump feels quite smooth. Anyone had this before? I'm going to take the pump back to the bat cave and take it into its component peices, so I could do a rebuild for around £50, or get a whole new one for £300 and keep the old one as a spare.

Edit: The more I look at that impeller, the more it looks like its been run without cooling water... a marina did move my boat without me there - which is almost unheard of for me... I wonder if they forgot to turn on the cooling water?

Hi all. Bit of an old thread, hope you don't mind me re-upping it.

@OP - did you bite the bullet and rebuild or replace?

Any recommendations on where in UK will do a rebuild that you can send in to?

Hello there,

I rebuilt it myself, and it was easy, satisfying and wonderful fun. Taking it off, and splitting all apart on the kitchen table was a perfect winter distraction, helped by my youngest boy. It hasn't leaked since. I can do a write up if you'd like? I think I have enough photos of the process.

Hey,
Just finished my 3rd season with d2-55.
Motor looks and runs great but quite a bit of water is leaking from the pump. When I get her on land in couple weeks, I was going to remove the pump and do a rebuild.
Could you give some tips. Where you bought parts. I’ve seen kits with and without shaft. Would you recommend replacing shaft.
Any special tools needed. Any tricks to remove certain parts?
Any advice at all would be appreciated

Evening,

I had meant to do a write up of this, and I will get around to it! It is one of those satisfying jobs you can take home from the boat and bash apart on your dining room table. I bought the rebuild kit from the fine people at parts4engines.

Volvo Penta D2-55 Raw Water Pump, Impeller & Service Kit

I didn't replace the shaft and it has been fine since. Looking back over the job, the special tools I used were:
  • A big Sealey puller to get the gear off the end of the shaft.
  • A smaller puller to split the bearings on the shaft itself.
  • A big torque wrench to torque up the nut once I was in reassembly mode.
  • Circlip pliers.
  • A big club hammer!
  • A 5 year old apprentice
Pulling the cog off the end. I remember the nut was rather tight and I needed to use rather a lot of leverage to remove it.

maybe add a pic or two with the seal on the shaft, to make sure none fits it the wrong way round with the spring getting in the seawater side like the idiot who rebuilt mine did last time! (different pump, but same logic/concept)

Fair point, so after the long piece of wood with the mallet had driven the shaft down, on the sea water side, we had the below:

Which can then be gently levered out. Note the metal washer behind the seal.

Shaft ready for reinstallation. I'll try and find time to write up the whole thing. It really is a fun process the rebuild of the pump.

On mine different engine there is a seal on the engine side under the gear to stop oil leaking out of the timing drive box.

So a water lip seal sealing water inside the pump and an oil seal the other way round to seal oil in the engine

Hey,
While the pump leaking water has gotten slowly worse the 3 years I have had the engine, it was on my last trip this season, that I saw oil in the water as well.
With that said, I have not had a chance to take off the water pump yet. i will do it next week after I put boat on land.
Will this rebuild kit include everything i need to fix both water and oil leak issues. And when i remove the water pump, will oil pour out. Do i need to empty some oil first somewhere?
And one last question. When i remove the 4 screws holding the pump in place (and disconnect the hoses), do I just pull the pump off, is there any tool or technique needed to remove the pump fromt he engine.
