My VP D2-55 A from 2002, 1 800 hours, need a new exhaust elbow and I am considering to buy from HDI Marine a stainless steel elbow but I am uncertain if there is a corrosion risk in the long run.
Cylinder head and engine block are made of alloyed cast iron and the pistons are made of aluminium alloy.
Not sure if there are other engine components that could be damaged in the long term with a SS elbow.

On my previous boat did I have Yanmar 3YM30 engine with a welded exhaust elbow which leaked after only a few years and was replaced with a brass elbow.
I have not been able to find a similar elbow (brass) with exhaust hose diameter 57 so I have 2 options:
* VP original exhaust elbow made of cast iron
or
* HDI Marine investment cast 316 stainless steel

The D2-55 do not have any anode so I am uncertain which material I should go for, any experience or advice from experienced sailors out there?

The dream is to sail from Sweden to the salty Mediterranean with as few problem as possible with the engine

Most Yanmar exhaust elbows fail by thermal fatigue rather than corrosion, although there may be a small corrosion input. See the bottom item on this page http://coxeng.co.uk/metallurgy/fatigue/. Conversely, most older Volvo engines fail simply by corrosion, largely due to their material of construction, cast iron or steel. If your engine is the same it would seem beneficial to go to a stainless steel. I cannot see that any other engine components would be at risk, as the water and gases mix in the elbow.

I really want to sleep well and avoid facing issues described in theses forum threads:

I agree on that Yanmar uses SS exhaust elbows (even though many being welded which can cause issues).
I suspect that the VP D2-55A heat exchanger can be damaged due to lack of required maintenance on the exhaust elbow, that can be the root cause to the issues on the threads above.

I will adapt your suggestion and go for a HDI Marine exhaust elbow (in SS without any weldings).
Thx for the help

I would like to share the delivery tracking so that others can understand the total time and thereby set valid expectations
April 1 did I order an exhaust elbow in stainless steel from HDI ,
April 3-4 USPS in San Francisco,
April 6 USPS in New York,
April 7 departed Copenhagen (in Denmark),
April 15 Postnord (in Sweden) took care of the customs work and finally could I pick it up from local Postoffice "in shop" (outsourced to local Coop shop). Additional cost 1 196 SEK for customs, Swedish VAT and Postnord fee (roughly 100 Euro).

Shipping cost: $86.83 via Priority Mail International® (USPS) (6 - 10 business days)
It took 7 days the last 400 km in Sweden including customs, in theory it could have reached me in 10 days if Postnord would have had a better performance but be prepared for 3-4 weeks delivery time in Europe from HDI.

I could follow the item via https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction_input

Postnord did not update USPS for each step, only the final delivery were sent to USPS Tracking tool.
The route from Copenhagen could I follow step by step via this URL

Just in case anyone is searching for details around tracking history here are the records
