I'm trying to determine source of water leak. On the 2002, the impellor housing seems to be an extension of the larger water pump housing, connected by what I would call a collar with a slot in it. Although there is dried out salt deposition on the gasket join and the bottom nut is corroded on the main pump body suggesting previous leakage, the water drip seems to accumulate on the underside of the body of the impellor housing - the impellor and gasket was new in the spring. Would it be worth getting the pump serviced anyway? Can't see any drip when engine is running - it starts dripping when I stop it.

(Tried to photograph but didn't have a third hand as one for the mirror and one for the torch!)

The "collar with a slot in it" is in between the two seals, and allows water (or oil) to escape if one of the seals fails. Sounds like you need to overhaul the pump with new seals. It's an easy DIY job. Make sure you reassemble with the seals facing the correct way.

If you can get Gaco seals with stainless backup springs, especially for the water side they'll last longer. Failing that pack behind the seal with grease.

I am dealing with this issue at the moment (see thread below) the pump is Johnson and repair kits which include the shaft are available for some models in USA. Bearings and double lip seals are commonplace items available everywhere and (not easily) replaceable but if there is any visible wear on the shaft it will still leak. A new pump is circa £290 plus vat.
I can not see grease being a cure for a leaking water seal, the impeller flow will soon wash it away.
Marineparts Europe have exploded diagrams with part nos. and the excellent Compass Marine website has a clear, well illustrated technical description of the process of dismantling and assembly of a similar pump. (Westerbeke engine)

Ropewalk marine in Lymington do exchange pumps at a significant saving on the VP item
