VP 2002 Air Cleaner

Leaning to maintain this older engine as I go. Took the air cleaner unit off the engine assuming it could then be taken apart, the element inside removed and cleaned. However as far as I can see it doesn't come apart. There is a little plastic plug though what that's for I don't know. Any ideas? The book sayswash the unit in diesel and allow to drip dry! Is that right? Also if I bung this in a bucket of diesel, how do I tell when the elent inside is clean. May be dumb questions but I've no idea I'm afraid. First time I've taken it off so be really grateful for any advice, as not sure how to proceed. Thanks.

Just dunk it in some diesel and swish it around.

BTW, look after it - you can't get 'em any more. Mine succumbed to tinworm, so I had to bodge something out of a Tupperware and some pot scourers - the ones with yellow foam and green scrubber on one side. It worked well and probably gave better filtration than the original!

Plug is for crankcase oil breather in some other applications not used on your application

I've a Volvo 2003 - same engine with an extra cylinder. The air filter always looks pristine - I've never felt the need to do anything to it! If you think about it, the air supply to the engine is taken from a sheltered location, and if it isn't pretty much dust free, it should be. The filter is really just there to ensure the engine doesn't ingest anything and to silence the air intake. It isn't working hard like that on a car or building site equipment.

I had an 2001 and was under the impression that the plastic bung in the air intake was for a heating attachment to assist starting as there are no glow plugs.. It was as an extra purchase and did not come as standard. This was understandable particularly as the 2001 had no extra cylinders to assist starting.

My air intake suffered too from wastage but a chrome cheapy from a car accessory dealer
worked fine. In fact , because of extra innards, the engine was a lot quieter and did not suffer nearly as much from valve noise.

Sorry no. On their website there are lots of car filter etc. Ignore these and look for the link to generic filters. I just chose one that fitted neatly on the air in take stub and is a good push fit. Been there about 5 years now as I really couldn't be doing with washing the original filter in diesel

Haven't noticed any difference in engine noise.
