Ah, I see, I note that our beloved leader (in a short break from his world tour) is giving us twenty-four hours notice. I am sorry that he feels that he has to carry out this change when I am out of the country on boating business and so I will be unable to man the barricades outside Fawlty Towers.
Your answer illustrates the strength and weakness of this forum. On the one hand, out of a total readership (yr 2000) of 37,000 there are 18,000 posts whereas the sailing fraternity have 166,000 readers and 28,000 posts (incl pbo). If I was IPC, I would be pleased with the MBC forum particularly as their are signs of weakness in their Motor Boat circulation figures. (I accept that many in pbo are "native" MBC posters but that also works the other way).
But, 5 people generate a third of all posts to MBC and 10 (at a guess) generate 50%. Therefore the opinions expressed are of a few and does this forum help IPC sell more of their rags? The answer might be no but neither should it hinder. The forum has become set in its ways and a shakeup might be long overdue. You have to admit that their is a conceit in this place (eg the how many lurkers posts). People are unlikely to be impressed with abuse being hurled at them depending on the type of vessel they have - a point which earned you the prize of the month.
What IPC should be doing is capitalising on the success of this forum. Weak moderation might be it's downfall?
What difference does it make whether they change it or not. Peeps on the forum, in particular the regulars, will find their own place and stay there. Most of the regulars that Parahandy mentions also communicate as much by pm & email. Still I enjoy the site for it's humour and zaniness so would vote to leave it as it is.
I see less need to split MBC, but more a need to reduce the yachty ones to 2 sites, put for sale & wants into one site, ditch the fuel price forum into MBC and move the General discussion forum to the top of the contents list. When I open it up it always appears of the page so you tend to forget about it, by moving it into a more visible place it will naturally attract more fun etc than the others. As mentioned before I would like a Marina/Harbours/places of interest type site, because going somewhere nice appeals to all boaters.
I think the suggestion has merit. If people can wander through threads, picking out those ones of interest, what's wrong with a better filter system? Libraries have fiction, non-fiction, then humourous and romance etc etc. The idea is to make it easier for people to find what they are interested in - otherwise it would be just a room full of random (house) books.
I'm also in favour of dividing politicians up by party and latterly by nation too. I can now avoid hearing too much about cattle market prices and a different legal system in which I am unlikely ever to become embroiled.
Just like road signs - straight ahead for this town, left for that and right for another. You just choose where you want to go.
I'd like to propose further developments to the planned user- defined-segmentation-thread navigation system. For example, when on Scuttlebutt, I sometimes come across threads about ketch rigged boats. Of no use to me, as owner of a sloop (my tender has an outboard only, so I qualify here on an honourary basis I hope). So I suggest a further division - to be called singlebutt and doublebutt - users elect for the forum they want based upon the number of masts they have, or want to have.
On PBO too, there are electrical threads, plumbing ones and hull matainance ones. I'd split these up too, just to keep things nice and tidy.
My final piece of virtual housekeeping, in the interests of 'customers', would be to separate all fora on the basis of age of poster and then a further division by 'posh quotient' of boat. That way, no-one would be offended, no-one would stumble upon irelevent material and perhaps die as a consequence.
We would of course all be bored rigid and a bit lonely.
I have carefully re-read my post, and I really tried not to "hurl abuse". But i did question the validity of his having the same weight as a regular reader of powerboat mags, user of powerboats, contributor to this forum, and thus having great sway over the format of MBchat. Likewise, I should have less over the format of saily mags, for example.
Possibly agree re moderation: it's a free-for-all once registered, other than normal netty rules.
As for lurkers - this (and scuttelbutt) forum differs from many in that most people do actually have or have access to a boat. More people is good- but not more at any price. If, for example, IPC had a tv ad and advertised the forum, they'd have more posters tho a useful forum.
Finally, the plan seems to ignore the value of the History. You've been able to look me up (or remember, sorry, well done) and so on from other posts. Isn't this the crux of the matter? Over time, people come back to see how that chap is getting on, who is buying what, whether something got fixed. Compare this with perhaps the BT 192 service - font of all knowledge regarding telephone numbers. Not an excellenet analogy, but nobody would call to see how they were doing, would they?
Hello again,
I get feed up reading drivel or trying to work out if the subject matter is worth reading... Having a separate forum is a jolly good idea.....
unfortunately, I can't comment further as I am an ex-port solentie, whereas you are current and hence on different forums, and I will ignore future posts from you as very unintresting and of no relevance to me ;-)
Well Kims certainly stopped the practical boat stuff in its tracks, more efficiently than the rest of us motley lot put together.
Stopped the banter as well. And theres a poor newby bloke caught in the middle of the two threads, that we are all having trouble leaving enough time for. Only ones who seem to want change are raggies anyway and dont come here much except
to gloat. Thats of coures not including all the raggies that like to come here with helpfull comments.
New forum needed on what to do with the forums. Then they can all rant on there and leave us lot in peace.
Now kim are there any sites around that have boaty stuff and fun mixed together in a friendly sort of way, Which also has a personal message board where people actualy apologise occasionaly and then become best of friends.
If anybody knows of one please leave message here!
I agree with you. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I also love the mixture of serious replies and humourus banter. If I want serious I can go to Practical Boatowner forum, which defunately needs livening up.
There is no need whatsoever to change this board. I have been reading and posting here for a very long time and it is without doubt the most successful forum.
The humour makes this board so much more than a gardeners question time. I posted a recent message about the Farrow system to remove antifoul. A serious informative post but with some underlying humour and the odd double entendre. (and a picture of my bum).
I could have made it a totally straight message- yawn.
But the humour would be nothing on its own.
IPC may think that they own this board but it is really owned by the people who participate, lurkers or not. It would be nothing without us.
Dave's right I know he says what he bloody likes and he likes what he bloody says but we could all abandon to Boatones chat room for our fun and frolics, its been done before!
At the risk of a little Fred Drift, please, my Atlantic crossing comments were somewhat tongue in cheek (e.g. comments about water wing buoyancy) but were made to just demonstrate that it might not be just as impossible as everyone else assumed.
However, please let no one think I was seriously advocating crossing the Atlantic in a P35. I was just pointing out that with the right mods and logistical support it is just within the realms of the possible!
I think most people would have twigged that and it is imho this sort of thing which makes this forum superior to any other.

ps can you note my name is Nick as Nic is a bit poncy!
....come, come Gentlemen, I think this is getting outta hand, let the powers that be have a say, altho if i was them i'd be sh*t scared to say anything. Now regarding the gardeners question time, I've got a climbing clematis thats showing signs of blackspot. Can anyone suggest a cure, many people have suggested SOLTRON, comments please.....
I lke the present mix. Forums benefit from a broad participation. Think splitting this forum would result in fewer total participants with consequent loss of interest. Seen it happen elsewhere. Need to maintain a critical mass.
yes and apologies, if MBC weren't here and in its present form and content, there would be many fewer posters elsewhere. It's the humour that draws people in to the whole site as well as your analogy. Thing is, I don't think the suits at IPC grasp how each plays off the other. It's probably not in the AOL/Time Warner world-play scenario.
