Hi all

Has anyone had the plastic top blow off or just break on a volvopenta engine, can you get an aftermarket part, as I believe you have to buy the complete filter assembly.

Yes mine cracked round the top and filled the bilge :-( the cap as shown was about £60 from VP.

Interesting, i would have thought if it cracked the pump would stop working.
No my strainer is well above the water line and mounted above the impeller pump, however that continues to work, and thereby forcing water out of the top of the strainer if/when the cap breaks, hence why the bilge fills. I was at Chichester Marina when I noticed mine, the VP dealer said it was very common and not to over tighten the cap.

and with a 'minor' leak likely to go all over the alternator :(

I wittnessed a brand new boat with twin Volvo's on drives, doing it's maiden voyage.

Half an hour in one of the strainers blew the lid off. Below it was the ECU and some, and when the skipper realized why the boat felt so heavy, water stood well up around the engines. The ECU 's were flooded and wouldn't turn the engines off. Hence fast idled and kept filling the bilge.

Bilge pump was trying, but couldn't cope. Managed to get the boat into the nearest marina and had an emergency lift-out.

Volvo took the responsibliy and did what they should, but talk about a boating debut

To me the setup is "error by design".

On some engines the strainer is after and above the raw water pump.

Yes its not a good design.
Mine has the strainer above but before the pump. I often used meet people with the same boat or very similar and they'd complain about the top cracking. The clear plastic lid seems to tighten and become difficult to remove even when you think very little force used to tighten. Just seems to become stiffer with time.

I'd always point out that it barely needs tightening. The design means it's above the waterline and the pump is sucking water through. A loose lid leaks air on, not water out, I put a little silicone grease on the o-ring and barely tighten at all. I just check after starting that it has filled with water. It takes a very light turn to fix if leaking. Pretty good design.

I have two of the pictured type, just above the water line.

A nice side benefit is that was easy to make an extra, transparent, lid with a garden hose connector. Always easy to provide water to start the engines while lifted out, this way.

Connect hose, open tap. At first water run "backwards", out of the intake until the engine starts, but nice to be able to run it as long as desired.

Last summer it cracked also on one of my engines (KAD32). Luckily, it is above water line so when engine was stopped, flooding also stopped. Btw. I was thinking that I am the only one experiencing this (I found only one case) but looks like that this is not that isolated. Anyway, I purchased new ones (around 50-60€, original Volvo) so now have one spare :)
