Talking specifically about the 74 fitted to a friends purchase which came complete with a problem ECU, it was to have been his ultimate Fairline , having worked his way up through a couple of Targa he finally arrived at F46 with shafts.So you're saying that there was a whole decade during which these ECU's were unavailable?
The thing is, these engines (KAD44/300/TAMD73/4/5) sold in large numbers so there will always "safety in numbers". If the original ECU's cannot be remanufactured then there are alternative ECU's now that would work (it's just the programming and connectors that need to be developed). Failing that, they can be converted back to pure mechanical blocks. And failing that, as engines are scrapped there will be second hand ECU's entering the market.

Spent a fortune trying to discover what was causing the boat to conk out "Mid Med" and finally having run out of mechanical solutions using various different boat menders in Majorka it was suggested eventually that engine electronics might actually be the cause and worth pursuing , this was actually a result of yours truly asking advice on this forum and forumites came up with the suprising suggestion that this had been actually a known problem and VP appeared to be uninterested in solving it.
The last of any remaining ECUs on VP shelves , at the time, had now been sold and second hand units became rarer as hens teeth due to no new units being available.
Posts on here and other sources suggested that there would be no attempt from VP to remanufacture a replacement item.
It would be interesting to know what changed in VPs refusal to supply a replacement unit other than economies of scale could not justify it.
This left some cracking boats out there with a large question mark about present and future problems.
All they had to do was to source some PCBs with a few chips and the problem would have gone away ...not exactly rocket science.
If somebody from VP had jumped on a plane with a working unit and popped across to Shenzen, a container of functioning units might well have beaten him back home.
Volvo could have quadrupled the price, popped it in a blue box and stuck it on the shelf.
Almost certainly would fail the day after the 6 months warranty finished but at least you could get new one.

When are you talking about? VP will still supply a part for 50 year old reverse gear but could not find the interest to supply spares for something much more vital and more recent.
