Can anyone help please? I am buying a boat which has a twin TAMD41P engines with around 350hrs on them. Anyone has any experience of ownership? maintenance? what could go wrong etc.? Any particular thing I should check/test during the sea trial?
Thank you.

Pretty sound engines. They formed the basis for the subsequent KAD series which saw them go from the original 200hp up to 285hp. We had the KAD 42's in our last boat and they ran well with few issues. Given the likely age of them 350 hours sounds low, which isn't always a good thing with diesels. I would check the service history and look for oil changes annually,

TAMD range are generally very well spoken of, and likely represent the culmination of the art of smaller (up to 400 HP) Marine Diesel Engine design by VP prior to the introduction of Common Rail and electronically controlled engines, and many on here would suggest that giant leap wasn't such an advantage for boating mankind, certainly me for one.

Had a TMD40A on my last boat, and now have two TAMD60C on the current one. Regardless of the fuel efficiency benefits of the current D Range, an engine that requires a 'get you home' setting when the electronics go awry, requiring by default the services of VP Laptop equipped engineers is something I would place on the same list as Waste paper baskets, hatstands and Royal Naval Officers on a boat - all useless.

Like outdrives, won't have common rail electronically controlled engines on any boat I will ever own, and I accept that will limit my choice in the future

... Standing by for incoming ...

Thanks - the engines are 2004 model - another daft question, what's different between TAMD41A and TAMD41B, 41C,41D...and 41P which I am buying?!

As the range is developed they add improvements, and generally the later the letter the better the engine as they have honed out issues from earlier models, so P should be the most developed. Sometimes minor changes but sometimes significant ones, especially when parts are required.

Manuals for most VP available here motoren.ath.cx

PS What boat ???

It's a broom 38!

So am I right to assume that no laptop connection etc. will be required to tune the engine etc.?

Hi there. My father's boat is a Broom 38 with 41p's which have 1300hrs or so..no issues at all. A tad smokey when cold perhaps but that clears. They use virtually no oil mid season (we keep a good eye out), although perhaps a little less stressed than other as we mainly use the boat for river use. It'll do over 20 knots, I'd say 22-24 at max revs with the wind behind etc! ;)

41p prefix was the last of the bunch. Revised fuel system so less start up smoke.

Only failure I've come across is leaking head gasket so look for coolant in the bilge and water stains down the block on exhaust manifold side.
