Looking at buying a 1987 - 32 Riviera Flybridge Cruiser with twin shaft drive 200hp TAMD41A engines in her.
They have around 16oo hrs each on the clock can someone give me some feedback or advice on these engines.
I believe this model is known to be a little smokey until they warm up but don't know much more.
Any info greatly appreciated.

Simple engines but at 33 years old perhaps worth having an Engineers inspection .
The hours run are not excessive.

Thanks for the feed back. I heard they used used these engines in government buses and are relatively bullet proof. The big thing Im expecting with these diesels is reliability so long as I can tolerate the smoke at start up! Also believe that they are hard to start when cold - these are all the stories Im getting. I guess for 60k a 32 boat with twin diesels isnt too back provided the engines stack up :)

We've got a Nimbus 3003 with single Tamd41a. Easy to maintain but when you say they're difficult to start from cold, I've never had an issue with starting except when I had air in the system after a filter change, I'd probably go further and say if they don't start straight away I'd be concerned but it could be a simple thing as above.

I’ve got a TAMD41p in my boat which might be slightly lazy starting if the weather is very cold, no glow plugs on this engine. In all other circumstances it starts on the button.

Thanks Jamie and yes I had another boat with TAMD70's in it and in summer they would fire up with just half a turn of the crank but in winter they would near flatten the battery. No glow plugs just didnt like starting cold in winter. One headache a boatie doesnt need so i was hoping these TAMD41As and a little easier to start up in the cold. Guess we will no soon enough !

41As can be smokey full stop, not just on start up. Black, sooty transoms are not uncommon on boats fitted with 41As.

I think the 41Bs are better and often fitted to the same boats with very little, if any, financial penalty. Unfortunately, I suspect there are not currently many Riviera 32 flybridges to chose from

My understanding is that the 41Bs are much better because the cylender heads were modified and combustion increased. Im now wondering if one could simply upgrade the 41A with heads off a 41B - Anybody know about this ?

That is beyond my knowledge. Volvo Paul on here would be the one to answer I suspect. Maybe drop him a PM.

Which boat model is it , riviera 32 what ? 60 k sounds expensive to me for a 1987 boat .

It’s the B series that shoots the transom not the A series , I’ve had 2 Fairlines with them in , the B was a pain , the A smoked at cold but was better at sea .

Heads are Same , compression higher on the B with modified pump and timing .
Combustion chamber is in the piston , all engine kits of later years gave the better piston design so you would need a rebuild .

That's interesting. I know of two identical boats, one with As and one with Bs. The A fitted boat always had sooted transom while the B fitted boat was always clean. Unless the owners both thought they had the wrong engines, which is very possible.

Wow this is great feed back Paul thanks so much. So if I can get past the smokiness of the 41A then it will be a more user friendly option - yes?

Its a 1987 Flybridge Cruiser, shaft drive that Im looking at.
