Volvo Penta TAMD 41-P Replacing Engine Oil

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the late reply. I just wanted to share with the community the engine oil setup I finally decided to use:

1. shell rimula 15 40
2. MotorKote® Hyper Lubricant
3. LIQUI MOLY MOTOR OIL SAVER

After using these, the engine runs noticeably smoother, and the noise has changed for the better.
Hope this helps others who are considering similar options.

Nice one - thanks 👍

Hmm...I wonder if molybdenum could have been the "magic ingredient" in the "low noise" oil I've seen, which TBH I took for a marketing gimmick.

The Motorkote stuff is an additive and comes with a shot of UCL. There is no indication of what is in it, but its alleged to bond with metal surfaces and persist through multiple oil changes.

I assume the liquid moly motor oil saver is a molybdenum anti-friction additive, and, from the name, maybe viscosity and total base number improver intended to rejuvenate tired oil, which shouldnt be needed on an annual oil change.

I like thick oil, but if I wanted thicker oil, I would use thicker oil.

One mystery additive is questionable, two more so, since they could interfere with each other as well as with the properly formulated oil. Here there are three, though the UCL probably wont interact with the oil significantly.

If motivated to this level of ...er...intervention, it might make sense to get some oil analysis done to try and get some indication of what is going on. I would bet money that the oil producer wont endorse these additives and I would think they are likely to deprecate their use.

I note the phrase "
  • We recommend waiting to install Motorkote® Hyper Lubricant® until a period past the new car warranty period.
"on the Motorkote site, suggesting the engine manufacturer might not be very keen either.

If I wanted an UCL I would use 2-stroke oil.
