Quick question to the Volvo fraternity

The above engine (on shaft, age 12yrs; Hrs TBC) fitted to a 24ft boat

Has this engine a repuation for particular problems; issues or things that need a careful look over?

Many thanks
Rob

I've got two, never had a single issue in 7 years, absolutely rock solid simple engines, all usual service stuff and thats it.

I think the 31 is a 4cyl version of of the 41, 6 cyl which went up to 285hp as bullet proof an engine when looked after as they have ever built.

Think the only criticism levelled against the 31 was that because it is 4 cylinder engine was not quite as smooth as the 6.

A great engine just a little lazy getting up on revs as no low down torque because later kad version had supercharger to overcome the lag, prop size has to be spot on as the seasons weed grows it gets worse getting up to revs . But otherwise a very simple engine to work on and cost wise look after.

I had a couple in my previous boat. Over 5 yrs and over 3000nm we encountered very few issues and they never once let us down. Only replacement bits needed were one replacement water circulation pump, one new raw water pump shaft seal and one set of injectors were re-tipped. As said, very simple engines and seem bulletproof. Also, ours had new head gaskets fitted when we bought the boat as (apparently) the ofiginal gasket material wasn't up to scratch with reslutant minor coolant leak down the side of the block. Only downside is that they are rough old lump, and yes as VP says gutless low down. Sweet spot was about 3500rpm for us.

The blooiming outdrives were far more troublesome!

Hi, I have a problem with mine right now... Hope someone can help with an idea?

I was out on my boat (RIB with jet drive) and over a few seconds, the revs died and bringing it back to idle, engine stopped; never again to restart.

It's turning over and with a couple of injectors cracked open, I can see the fuel is getting to the cylinder but not even attempting to fire. Not sure how the stop solenoid works but if I have an electrical issue, would it cut off the fuel pump? The heaters seem to be heating up ok too.
