Volvo Penta kad42 just stopped at sea

I take it you've had it inspected and yo're not just going by the comments above? The good news is that there's lots of re-build parts available and the removal of an engine is often less scary and time consuming as people think.

It sounds scary to me

It's about 3-4 hours work to remove an engine on my boat and about the same to put it back in.

Our VP dealer charges £35 an hour and as we're a syndicate I pay a third of the cost.

Obviously, there's the cost of a lift and a telehandler on top of that.
What was that for ? If you don’t mind me asking ?

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

have you turned it over with the leg off?

Cost depends on cause really.

You just be remembering something I said to you last year .
Last year I was called to a D6 that the local dealer had attended and condemned it saying it was seized , well it’s wasn’t but the upper gear unit was . Drive off and started up perfect .

Most of what I know about Volvo engines has come from you ??

Hi all thank you for all the advice everybody gave but you would have never have guessed what happened .

Engine stripped no 5 con rod welded to crank shaft. After market parts were used. Lets start with the interesting stuff - oil filler pipe been cut off and only 150mm inside sump, crank bearings not Volvo, wrong con rod on no2 when stripped, head gasket reused and siliconed back on, oil cooler so badly smashed and damaged inside never would have worked properly. All gaskets re used and siliconed back in. Also engine came out so easily, the engineer said it must’ve been taken out and worked on just before we bought it. So overall for a boat that I have had for a year and only done 12 hrs with 10.5 of those hrs training, very disappointed in the broker, seller and mechanic at the marina up north where we bought her. I can’t believe people went this far and could have caused life threatening injuries - it could have caught fire very easily.

Now have professional in Poole sourcing another engine.

Since the work was done before the OP bought the boat perhaps there is no evidence of who was involved the engine work?

Doing more homework first but may name and shame. Previous person did have boat for a number of years. The broker, owner and mechanic all knew each other too. I spoke to the mechanic when I bought the boat to ask about the work he had done.

Appreciate your comments.

Other items aside, who on earth would reuse a head gasket, I'm surprised any engineer would do this, madness.

Did you see any letter headed invoices for any previous work .Not just alleged routine like lub changes but for cracking it open .

Thats dreadful using after market parts and reusing gaskets .Sounds like a bodger DIY er .Can’t imagine a professional engine builder not doing it properly.

I mean what’s the last oil invoice say ?

I was recently looking at a car forum and a guy had a ceased motor .He removed to pattern part oil filter and it turned out it was just a can .A can with no internal paper elements.

Some OCD guys at the lub changes actually habitually cut them open remove the paper cartridge and send it away for metal analysis….to dig out the pores and find what’s trapped .This is as well as a routine oil analysis a sump sample .

As far as shells for the crank I did not know you could get pattern parts .I know there’s issuers cleaning the galleries and lining up the lub hole and correct tightening down , to prevent them spinning obscuring / blocking to gallery……and with zilch lub ending up with what you have .

But could be duff oil pump not enough pressure at the crank .Senders are usually placed directly before the crank gallery for obvious reasons .I am assuming VP follow convention ?
Was that the pick up pipe “ cut off 15 cm “ short ?
