Any tips for buying a small quantity of look-alikey paint? I don’t need half a litre (at £15 plus) and don’t really want a spray can. Just a little humbrol-sized pot would do.

Ditto primer if anything fancy is needed. Not sure whether a regular zinc primer or Hammerite Metals primer will be heat resistant enough? I would guess so.

I have a pot of this from parts4engines, lasts for years, but I get that's its a lot of paint. I am sure other smaller pots are available from other retailers, coulor may not be quite right but perhaps it does not matter. You could take a bit of your engine(small bit) to B&Q and they will scan the colour and mix up some paint, probably not enamel though:-0.

I’ve now found several other threads on this subject. Ford Meadow Green (£9.99 for an aerosol from Halfords) might match, ditto POR-15 Buick Green but at a very much higher price than a tin from Parts4Engines. Various other spray can options around the £12-15 mark. Think I’ll just bite the bullet and by a can from Parts4Engines as I’m just about to order a whole load of bits from them.

You can mix Hammerite to get a decent colour match. Use the smooth stuff.
I did not bother when I tarted up a rather rusty MD 11 for a friend. I just used some green that I had but I think just a little blue added to it would have made a good enough match. I throughly de-rusted it thenused the Hammerite direct but if you are painting aluminium bits use the Hammerite primer.

I have to admit that it crosses my mind to brush off my old Perkins and give it a face lift .. at present it looks like a lump of rust. But it runs as sweet as a baby.

What paint will I use ? Bog standard enamel or smooth Hammerite ... cannot see point of wasting money on a 'Engine Branded' paint ....

You could upgrade it to a Volvo Penta by using green paint:)

Update - very impressed with the Parts4Engines lookalikey Volvo green paint. Goes on easily with a brush and the brush marks flow out of their own accord. A close match for my year 2003 MD2020D.
