Hi,

my D4 consumes in my opinion to much oil. It consumes approximetly 1 liter oil/10 hours. The engine does not smoke or leak oil into the bilge.

Has somebody else have had the same issue with the D4 engine?

Could a faulty oil cooler cause the abnormal oil consumption?

One for VolvoPaul however there seem to have been some issues with Volvo D Series dip sticks which for their own reasons come pre-calibrated. IF you are running too much lube oil it will certainly burn off.

We've only done about 30 hrs on our new (to us) mobo with a pair of D4's. Not drank a drop. But there again, the lumps have only done sixty something hours so they jolly well shouldn't be using it.

D range motor should not use oil. D6 motor had dipstick issue. At next service drain oil and add correct measured amount to sump then check stick and record level on stick. Do not add oil to show level to full mark.

Check breather filters are not blocked and have been changed at last service. Perforated filters will allow air box to suck oil into engine inlet allowing oil to burn off. Eventually blocking intercooler.

Yes, I have the same problem with 2 new D4's. The dip sticks may be inaccurate. Looking into it this week with Volvo expert. I'll let you know what I find out.

Did you find out something? Having the same issue with my D4-300 currently @300h and still need topping up regulary during season!

In all the hundreds of D 4/6 engines we have as customers only one has had a problem with oil consumption. It was a Sealine S34 with 2 D4's and we monitered the consumption which was abnormal, we found out that he went for hours on end at idle speed while entertaining his pensioner friends. Result glazed cylinders, in reality he has the wrong boat for his use.

We use the boat to commute to our summer cottage, 1.5h @2600-2700 rpms each way. We get about 80-100h per season on the engine and it has been using 1l/10h since new! Volvo Penta is now investigating what is causing this abnormal oil consumption..

I have D4 300's new in 2012 and now at 180hours. One engine drank a few litres in the first 20 or so hours then settled down and hasn't used any since. The other engine has never needed any top up. Faulty dipstick readings were part of the problem, I believe because the port engine dipstick was moved to the opposite side of the block away from the default position by the manufacturer

I had a scare couple yrs ago with my D4 I dipped it and it showed no oil, I drove 30 miles round trip for a 5L can of oil put about a litre in, dipped it and it showed far to much oil, being confused, I double checked and had to remove about a litre and it was about right on the dip stick. I thought I was going mad, I did nothing out of the ordinary and oil doesn't hide.

Update to our case on engine consuming oil, Volvo will replace long block under warranty. So our problems should be over after that :)

Great, now after block exchange the engine feels sluggish and will only rev to 3000 rpm. Our local volvo penta workshop refuses to believe something is wrong, as no fault show up on vodia!
Before block replacement the engine took 3450 revs at WOT with same propeller!! they only suggest that we should change to a smaller prop.
