Volvo Penta D2 MDI failure - what are the typical symptoms?

I have a 2014 D1-30 that I use all year around and it still has the original MDI box. Because of the known sudden failure issues of these things I installed a couple of push buttons switches for start and glow plugs as described in other posts. I wired the start switch back to the MDI box but for the glow plugs I just wired from battery to switch and then to the bar connecting the 3 glow plugs together. I could have wired back to the MDI box but the glow plugs are grounded through the engine so this works fine for me. I live on Vancouver Island BC so not what I would call cold but without the glow plugs the engine does a lot of cranking before firing up. MDI box still works so have not had the need to rely on my button switches yet but they are ready to go just in case. Nothing fancy but they work.
