VP maintenence handbook indicates need to check strainer in lift pump periodically. However, same maintenance booklet indicates a) undoing the nut on top of the domed cap, b) lifting off the dome to reveal the strainer. On removing the nut, nothing moves - looking more closely at the lip of the cap it does not seem to be removeable - maybe it's just painted over and never been checked?
Any ideas

If I remember rightly - and I don't have the manuals to hand - there are two versions of the lift pump, and only the older one has a gauze filter (it may be the other way round!).

I think you are right. Only the older pumps have a filter . The newer ones are completely sealed and non serviceable

But as he has loosened the bolt and tried to remove the cover there should a strainer in there
The cover do develop striction and require prising off with mini podger
Suggest that you renew both washers IE small one under bolt and larger one under cover

This had me scratching my head recently, I found another post which said that there was no filter in the newer pumps.

If you ever want to replace your lifter pump the "Orbitrade 17323 Fuel Lift Pump" from ASAP (£90) is a direct replacement of the Volvo pump on the 2002. I swear my engine starts better since I replaced mine.

As the engine is c.1986 I guess it must be one of the older ones. As the upstream fuel filter was completely clean when I changed it I wouldn't imagine there is any crud in the strainer though.

Under £70 from Keyparts, well it was when I bought one 3 months ago.

There probably won't be. If you've removed the central bolt, the conical cover should prise off. If the engine runs OK, I'd leave it alone.

You also need the short pipe to fit the pump, IIRC it cost more than the pump. I replaced mine (on a 2003) and agree it just seemed to run better and was easier to bleed. When I took the old pump to bits the spring on one of the valves was displaced which explains a lot IMHO.

Hi. I know that post of yours is very old... but being about to do that same replacement, I was wondering if you had to buy any additional hoses for the pump to be installed. If so, would you mind telling me exactly which part(s) you had to buy?
Thank you.
