I'm getting ready to replace my diesel fuel tank which feeds a Volvo Penta 2002 18 hp engine, but I don't see where/how there's a return line going back to the tank. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe originally the return line went to the fuel filter, although not ideal. See also this old post Thread 'Volvo 2002 Fuel return' Volvo 2002 Fuel return

As said it returns to the filter , or rather to the fuel outlet connection on the filter

Mine goes back to the tank. Just follow the lines from the injector. Mine go to the right rear of the engine, quite low down.

It's definitely essential, wherever it goes! The Volvo 200x engines recycle a lot of fuel; when mine's running, you can hear a steady trickle going back into the tank if you put your head next to the tank. Also, after a few hours running, the tank becomes noticeably warm! If there's no return line connected, your bilges would rapidly fill up with diesel, and you'd certainly know about it.
