Hi all

I have got a leak coming from my raw water pump. Not from the impeller, but from behind where the pump body bolts to the head/block.

Can anyone give me an idea whats involved in replacing the seals that I believe are in this pic I found on the Volvo parts europe sight. The number of the seals that I think I have got to replace are marked up as number 11. Is there a kit available for a whole pump refurb??

It is as simple as it looks??

It looks like it should just slide out of the head/block after undoing the two pump body bolts.
Any help would be greatfully recicved

Many Thanx

What you are getting is water out of the "witness" hole, so called because it shows the first seal, stopping water going back is leaking. The other seal faces the other way and stop oil coming forward. Make sure your replacement seals have stainless springs and you put them on the right way. Worth changing the impellor and the swash plate while you have it apart.

If it's as old and well-used as most MD7s it's likely to have wear on the spindle, which will make short work of new seals. A kit is available with a new spindle, seals and bushes. It's easy to fit but don't force the spindle back in - remember there's a slot in the end for the drive that must engage.

But it is an easy-peasy job.

Just remember to ensure the seals are placed so they do not blank off the weep hole.

The seals you need are "Type R23" and as Steve noted, they are 1" x 1/2" x 1/4" Imperial seals, available from any decent bearing/seal factors or via the Internet; I recently bought eight of them for £10 including postage/VAT. Why? because ours has a worn shaft as noted by mudhook, but I'd been told that the shaft was only available as part of a complete new pump assembly; I'll re-enquire.

Actually billjratt, I have, so I might have to ask him to knock me up one. My shaft is quite badly worn in places so I will def have to replace it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The pump came off as easy as everyone said and yep, you can see the state of both the seals are absolutly shot. And when I put my finger in the hole into the engine, there was emulsified oil/water mix, so I have been lucky not to do serious damage.

I am now trying to source all the bits for thew refurb, seals etc.

Thanx for everyones help.. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
