Volvo MD32 106\'s??

Hi...

I think I have found the boat Im looking for, Its a Princess 32 with twin Volvo MD32 106's.
The engines look really clean but what are the parts like to get hold of? I think some of the parts were made by Peugeot and these are the parts Im thinking may be difficult to track down...also are these engines reliable?

Thanks Wal

Re: Volvo MD32 106\'s??

Straight 6's developed as a joint project between Volvo and Peugeot.
One of the first marine diesels with Alu top, I believe, which had a tendency to cause problems with the top seal, if run too hard, or put under strain too fast during the warm up period. Know of some "disaster stories" with several blown tops (impatient owners and under powered boats .... mostly planning hulls) where strain have caused the problems above. Most of these people changed engines to the TMD40A's later and had no such problems. Also know of MD32's which are still running today with 1,000's of hours on the clock, with little or no history of problems. Guess my advise would be to get a proper engine survey, try ot get the history and get an impression of how the owner treated the engines. And if you buy, take care of the engines properly..... (Have you looked at Fairline Mirage 29's which are of similar era ??)

Re: Volvo MD32 106\'s??

Base engine is a Peugeot/Indenor XDP 6/90 and some of the parts are getting VERY hard to find. The non marine parts may be sourced via Peugeot or motor factors but the marinising parts are a challenge to say the least. I had to 4 cylinder version (MD29) and had problems with heat heat exchanger/header tank and exhaust manifold. There is a great recipe for corrosion around these parts. The cost for Volvo replacements could have been around £2500 but I used a Bowman manifold / heat exchanger that cost £500. I do not know if there is a 6 cylinder version available though. Engines should be reliable if used conservatively on the river for example but if you want to go to sea and make any seriouse passages they may be more likely to cause problems. If I were looking at buying a boat with either of these engines I would seriously consider the prospect of replacing the engines rather than trying to keep them in good working order. Lancing Marine do some good deals in conversion kits and engines, thats the direction I would go in. Further example of potential problems;- Exhaust outlet bend, common replacement item on these engines, Volvo price around £800. Having said all that the Princess 32 is a very good boat and will give many years of pleasure.
Regards,
Eddie
