I have a 1983 freshwater cooled MD11D; as any vintage Volvo owner knows, spare parts are unavailable or cost prohibitive. I have the opportunity to buy a raw water cooled MD11D (same year) at a good price and I’m thinking of buying it just for the spares. Other than obviously the freshwater system parts, how compatible are the parts between the fresh and raw engines?

Grab it!
Then physically check the parts you want.
If the parts don't match, sell it on.
If it fits, keep the parts you need and sell the parts that you don't.
The chance won't come along tomorrow!

Most of the user changeable parts are the same, one part that may be different is the thermostat as the one in the freshwater cooled engine may be set at a higher temperature than the one on the sea water cooled engine.

Thermostats can be checked using a saucepan on the hob and using a thermometer to confirm the set temperature. The thermostat maybe marked with the set temperature,
