Second Chance has an OLD Volvo MB2A-50S petrol saildrive. After 25 years of service it needed looking at.
I knew that the original engine was manufactured by Honda for Volvo, but doubted parts would still be made by Honda. Wrong!! The MB2 engine (not sail leg) including cambelts, castings, alternator, starter mech and gaskets are all still in robust manufacture as the current model 6hp outboard from Honda
I enquired about the cost of Volvo gaskets
Cylinder : 52 quid
Inlet Manifold Hot Side:17 quid
Inlet Manifold Cold side : 10 quid
Oil Pump: 7 quid
Oil Seals : 5 quid
Potential Total: 91 quid!!!!!!

Total when purchased from Honda dealers? 43 quid total

The cylinder head on mine had corroded away, and I had a provisional estimate of 800 quid 'if we can get one'. So I went away and welded new material into the bad areas, and had the gasket faces remachined. A lot of work. Now I find that I can have a 2nd hand Honda one for peanuts.

I am therefore chuffed to bits to learn that my engine story will run and run.

I will buy your old MB2A if its laying around doing not a lot, or an electric start 6hp Honda outboard if its dead.

Jim

In my experience, Honda Marine seem to be good at keeping spares available for very old engines, which is commendable. My first boat (an Extravert) still has its original Honda 75 (7.5hp) supplied in 1981. It's still going strong, and spares are easy to come by. It seems that it was one of the first four stroke outboards made, according to a Honda dealer. Anyone know of an older one?

Head Needed - was Re: Volvo MB2 parts shock!

Dear All,
I've just been reading the mb2a/50s thread with great interest.

I deparately need a new or servicable head for my MB2A/50s. If anyone has one for sale (or even a whole engine), or perhaps they can supply me with more contact details for where I can get a secondhand head, or indeed more details of wherer I might enquire about a new one from Honda Marine if they are available, I would
be most greatful.

I have used Marinepower several times. The first time they sent me my order of a gasket from stock in 2 days. Great.
The second time, I emailed them pictures of my head and muffler showing the rot. I followed up with a phone call to discuss. They said they would get back to me. No further reply. I went ahead and repaired the head myself.
After that I ordered head gasket, inlet gaskets and oil seals. They said they had posted them no less than 4 times. After the last time, I gave up contacting them. The 'sent' gaskets never arrived, and surprise surprise I havent been billed for them either.
I then used Volspec in Tollesbury. Gasket arrived in 2 days. The rest I got from Marine Engineering in Tollesbury, who were very helpful in comparing current model 6HP Honda parts to the old Volvo. Their parts were cheap and quick. Conclusions are yours to draw.
