Hi,

Boat is a 2001 Sea Ray 260 with Volvo KAD44

1) Temperature guage shows just under 100deg celcius when up and running at speed, never goes higher and no alarms, is this just a dodgy sea ray guage, where should i look to check it further?

2) I have a mechanical volvo throttle and gear lever on the helm, can this be changed for a the electronic control? Is it as simple as swapping the controls over at the helm or does it not even have the electronic drive selection components?

3) When i turn the engine off, i turn the key to position 0 and the rev counter wanders around at about 2000rpm (even though the engine is idling fine) then when i turn back to the stop position i get a buzzing noise and the engine stops fine. Should i be investigating the tacho reading nonsense when i turn it to zero?

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

Hi Mat.

Cant even pretend to understand the techie stuff on engines, but I have 2 of the little beauties in a Fairline.

The guages read about 180 ish when running properly. Both the same.

EDC is excellent, although I am told a little basic by todays standards.

A good engine by all accounts, but I recon your guage must be pants! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Jason, if your kad44's are running at 180 celcius then you've got a problem. Normal operating temp for these is about 85c as I recall (but hopefully volvopaul will be along in a moment to give us the facts).

Cheers
Jimmy

He meant 180F ... don't think it's possible for water/coolant to reach 180C

Hi Mathew and welcome to the Forum. I would look closely for a dodgy earth . Had a similar problem last year with my Kad 42`s and it seems a dodgy earth adds for some reason 10 degrees C to the temp. Test it by running a wire from a known good earth to the neg side of the guage--got to be worth a try. If not I`ll swap your over heat for my oil leak? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Matthew,

Both my current and previous Searay needed a change to the sender device on the KAD32 / KAD44 before the temp gauge would work properly. As the boat is delivered the gauges are set up for Merc engines which send a different voltage to a Volvo. I'm just wondering if the box has not been changed or is faulty. I would speak to Garry, the service manager at Marina Marbella in Hamble. He's a helpfull chap.

Yes Jimmy here at last! cant understand why the builders have put mechanical control on helm are you sure its a 44 n not a 43? the pump is electronically controlled so the cable from the throttle must go to a potentiometer to work the injection pump, the outdrive is still cable to work forward and reverse, on edc set up there is an ms unit, maybe they have done away with that as there not 100% reliable, you could fit the edc controls but the lever is quite costly.

As regards the temp then yes the sea ray gauges are wrong for the volvo, they have to be matched to the senders.

Sounds like a slight wiring fault somewhere, check the push fuses in the black box and disconnect the 16 pin plug a few times maybe theres a dry joint somewhere, check all wires in the box and the alternator terminals.

Normal running acceptable temp is below 90 really when a stat opens fully at the rated temp the heat exchanger should be able to keep the engine cooled at a constant rate, of course if its a single engined boat with 6 months weed and scum on the bottom then everything is working harder, ideally then a couple of degrees above the stat rated temp in a fully operational cooling system.

Hi,

thanks for the replies, on closer inspection it looks like there is 2 cables from the manual control on the helm, one cable goes to a mounted potentiomenter in the engine bay and the other appears to go into the leg, i have got a volvo electronic control lever here to fit, but, cant see how it is going to select the gear, do i need to add an electronic actuator to go the gear selector on the leg?
If anyone can help me with this conversion i am to pay!

Matthew
