I think my coolant pump has died.

Coolant temp alarm went off, so shut down...

Once all cooled down again, took her for another run... long story short, the coolant in the header tank is cold, engine is getting hot and a squeal from the area of the coolant pump, so time to chuck a new one in, I guess.

Is it a pig of a job? IIRC it was mentioned here not too long ago (i'm about to do a search) and there were bad words mentioned!!

Any advice much appreciated.

me and @BruceK have done it. bruce only a few weeks ago.

It’s not too bad...tricky but is getting thermostat seal right as you have to land it into the exhaust manifold and onto the water pump at the same time.

sorry....some of my picture orientations are a bit confusing

Ah yes, it was yourself and BruceK I was thinking of!

OK, so Thermostat housing off first, yes? And then the pump?

More than that!

supercharger, belts, pulleys, mounts etc....

I took thermostat off before pump but perhaps @volvopaul has some improved method hewn from years of experience. I’ve done 1....and broke it trying to remove! ???

Supercharger doesnt need to come off but its front bracket does as so too the hydraulic pump if the stbd engine. Its a pig of a job to get to. Send it off to be reconditioned as per my thread. They did a superb turnaround and job.

I can only think that it's the coolant pump as when the engine temp started climbing, the coolant in the header tank was cold!

I'm on my way to the boat now to try and remove the pump... if anyone has any tips / tricks, please do share!

Well, it's the pump that's the issue. impeller is not spinning when I turn the pulley.

I'm guessing that the pulley isin't included in the pump? I was hoping for a bolt off/bolt on replacement!

I can genuinely endorse these people who did a fantastic job on mine. Courier and turnaround in less than a week at a price that is super competitive. Just phone them. Mine came back and had I given it to you to inspect you'd have said brand new

The issue is with my circulation pump for sure, sea water side is fine!

I can't get my head round how the pulley is removed from the old pump.... i'll figure it out when the new pump arrives I guess.

the pulley unbolts. The conical section is press fit so you won’t get that apart.....without a press!

New pump will look like this

if your pump looks like mine with the pulley behind.....I had to buy a “conversion” pulley which bolts on the front

Thanks BruceK - I'll give them a shout. I'm in Ireland so could get caught for customs etc.

Mr Googler - See below pics, mine appears to be a bit different?

Looks like your shaft has snapped?

the top hat isn’t supposed to come off.....without pressing the shaft/coolant pump wheel out the back

Bruce has a later “front” mounted pulley I think

Yes the shaft has snapped off the front cover it appears... you're correct I think, that cover isin't meant to come off! If I buy a new pump from Volvo, it doesn't appear to come with the pulley... just can't get my head round how you take it off if that cap isin't meant to come off.
