Can someone please advise whether the 44's need the same mandatory tappet adjustments as per the KAD 300's. We've had the latter before, and I know that the tappets had to be adjusted every 150 hours maximum, or there could be dire consequences. I believe they are both effectively the same engines, so I am presuming the same tappet issue applies.

Thanks.

I've got Kad44's in a T40. If purchasing have the take a readyout of the EDC computer and take a picture. From memory on spec turbo pressure is 2.5 bar.
Just replace mine and with hindsight they were past sell by date/borderline when I purchased the boat 5 years ago. Could be a negotiating point in the sale. Other items that generally need replacing around the 10 year mark are: exhaust elbows, riser pipe, clutch cones on the outdrives.

Thanks. The boat comes with a 3 month warranty on engines and drives. I will have a friendly Volvo engineer check them thoroughly if we go ahead, and can have it fixed under warranty.

Are you sure, or is this true for salt water only? My boat is fresh water from new and I have zero issues. That said, I think the fresh water use (and regular engine use) has a lot to do with it.

Granted, the tappets and usual servicing has always been done.

The service interval is 200 hrs for valve adjustment on these engines, and if you can get someone to do it for £100 bite their hand off, as having done this job dozens of times I certainly wouldn't do it for just £100! The last one I did I charged £400 for two engines on a Windy 32, the owner was pleased as I had pointed out they had never been done as evident by the undisturbed paint on the injector pipes where they connect to the injectors. His fantastic mechanic couldn't be arsed and the engines had now done 600 hrs so they had missed two adjustments! If the paint is intact then they haven't been done no matter what anyone tells you.
It can be a tricky job if there is poor access and you do it properly and remove the injector pipes to get the valve cover off, instead of bending the pipes as I have seen cowboys do.
Then you have to treat the cover gasket gently as its no longer available, otherwise you have to make a new one with a bead of silicone applied in two stages if you don't want an oil leak from the aft end of the cover by the turbo inlet elbow.

Looking at an invoice it was 2.5hrs labour at £45 per hour + VAT an hour at SAL Marine. Single engine with no access issues.

And some more time on s prestige 36 terrible boat for engine access

I think we have both had our share of difficult boats to do this job on, Windy 25's and upwards to about 34ft then you start to get some headroom, and yes Prestige and a few others come to mind.
