Volvo DP Drive wobble

I have DP-D drives that seem to have too much side to side play in them. I think something is worn but as a starting point can anyone point me to the parts that would be suspect.

Sound like the hood bushes are worn, maybe even the steering arm inside the boat and the shaft on the steering hood.

It's a strip down job, take drive off, undo or maybe drill out the grubscrew on the steering arm, disconnect angle sensor, remove if possible to avoid damage. Fit a wooden drift from the rear between the hood and the shield, knock n wedges this will force the hood down, remove bushes, clean up everything and apply grease, fi a new grease nipple to the arm and make sure the grease holes are clean. All sounds simple I know but on an old boat it isn't.

A pair of hardwood wedges worked best for me as the considerable amount of bashing on end of wedges to move the blimming steering arm thing tended to split softwood ones.

How much play do you have? They are never solid and have a bit of play, inch or so either way. Have a walk round your local marina and have a wiggle of some out on the hard to see how they compare to yours.

Yep, my old DP-Ds had a good inch of wobble and mechanic opinion was that it was fairly usual for those drives. Wasn't an issue when I sold either.

I had the same issue a few years ago on KAD 300s on a Targa 34. Good idea to compare the wobble with other boats in the yard as there will always be a small amount of play. In my case it was worn hood bushes.
