Has the ecu been flashed to the correct engine etc combination ?

I have not, it is a 2nd hand PCU which we expected to have plug n play function with the information provided on engine type, drive type, etc

Been doing some digging with the supplier and turns out the PCU was from a D9 inboard, whilst we have a D6 Stern drive. No wonder the trim functions dont work. Regardless with this, its still strange how our existing PCU's can both fail on the boat. What can be the causes? Can a software or configuration just 'disappear' from the unit through time?
