Volvo D4 fault code

Just found out that my stbd engine has come up with a fault code 1.4.9 "sensor fault in engine"

Is now operating on reduced power mode.

Anyone got any idea which sensor it could be?

If your filters have water sensors I would suggest a good place to start is to drain about 100ml from the engine filters into a clear jar, leave it over night and look for water.

My Volvo operators manual gives error code 1.2.1 as "water in water trap in fuel filters".

so dont know if thats the problem.

Qute simply no..1.4.9 is different PID therefore not the same fault. Does your manual state what this code is??

Perhaps some Volvo guys can chime in here but this makes me uneasy, unless owner can find out exactly what fault code relates to without plugging in service tool this cannot be right.

Cat, Cummins and D.D.(inc MTU) publish full details of the range their PID,SID fault codes. Do Volvo Penta?
 
Il just explain why i chipped in , I only have a D9 manual to hand and 1.4.9
just read sensor fault which wasnt very helpful.

I do know of a D4 which recently had issues of a very similar nature , although the owner didnt trace his own fault so it is difficult knowing if the mechanic did what he charged for it turned out to be a faulty sensor in the engine fuel filter.

My diagnostic was that sensor had been knocked off the fuel filter.

If the water sensor is knocked off 1.4.9 makes better sense than 1.2.1

The sensors can also fail if there is debris at the base of the filter, wash the sensor in petrol and change the filter may clear it.

Please be aware Mike I am not a mechanic, you should take far more notice of latestarter and or volvopaul.

I have a catch 22 situation here. I need to get the boat over to the Volvo dealer/service centre which is a 5 mile trip across the bay. Engine will start but will only rev to about 1500 rmp. Dont want to make the trip in case I do something drastic to the engines. The boat is based here in Spain the dealer is not being that willing to drive about 15 miles around the bay to connect his "magic" laptop to tell me what the code 1.4.9 means!!!!!

Just to let you know that fault code 1.4.9 refers to temperature sensor on inlet manifold. My stbd engine was showing 120 degrees thus giving me reduced power. Had to get Volvo dealer to put his laptop on the system to tell me that!!! Relatively easy to change sensor so why cant volvo say so in the manual and save cost of call out!!!

Where is the inlet manifold located?
 
The sensor sits on top of the manifold right at the front just aft of the coolant filler cap, under the black cover. The manifold runs along the port side of the cylinder head. The sensor is easy to change just one 10m head bolt.

And I've lost count how many I've fitted , surely this sensor is t the right one for the job .

Glad you have got that one sorted.
We had a meal at Sara's new "Sky Blue" restaurant a couple of weeks back. Everything was excellent as usual with the new location perfect, as we can now walk there from the boat.
