After my 2 hour trip back from Chichester yesterday, I noticed a very small quantity (approx. 1/2 an egg cupful) of what appeared to be coolant in the bilge....it was green water. After the engine had cooled down, I checked the coolant level, which was OK, and had a quick look around to see if I could spot any signs of a leak, but found nothing.

Am I correct in thinking that the Volvo D4 hasn't got a coolant expansion tank and, if so, any suggestions of what things I should be checking to find this small leak?

Many thanks in advance.

Allan

The cap is on the expansion tank which sits across the front of the engine. Check hose clamps and and around heat exchanger which is on the port side behind the fuel filter. I use a good light and a mirror to check along the side of the engine block to see where any coolant is running down.

I seem to remember you asking how to change the coolant a while back, did you overfill in which case it's blown out the excess, or have you fully tightened the drain bung on the block and heat exchanger plastic plug?

Finding a very slight leak of green antifreeze on a green coloured engine - what a pain.
I had a similar issue a coulple of years ago - but not the same engine.
I cleaned up the spill and after several attempts using clean paper towels, placed in various likely places , and running the engine while at the marina . I finally traced it to a plug on the turbo, at the back of the engine.
Your engine is probably not leaking at the same location but using paper towels to assist in the search is worth a go as it may reveal a tiny amount of moisture that is otherwise difficult to see.
