My Volvo D3s are not fitted with a seawater filter as shown in the Operator's Manual. As I understand it there is gauze or whatever fitted in the water intake in the legs which presumably does the job instead. I am told that the lack of filters is not critical as the impellors will mince up any weed that gets through.

A seawater filter can be retro fitted at a cost of £235 per unit plus labour.

The engines have done approx 200 hours and my gut reaction is to just do nothing . Does the panel agree with this approach or not?

It came as a surprise when I discovered that the D3s on the SC29 I had just bought didn't have raw water filters fitted. The D3 160 A-A doesn't have them. The D3 160A-C which replaced the A-A pretty quickly does. I had the raw water filters retro fitted at the first opportunity; that was two years ago.

Since then very little has got through to the filters but there has been some weed and some other bits and pieces so I am glad I had them fitted.

I can't find the invoice but don't recall it costing me as much as you have been quoted.

Over 500 hours on D3-160's with no raw water filters and never a problem
and that included some inland waterway cruising.
My manuals never showed them either.

why is so much **** talked about the D3 engines?
yes I had initial problems but when they were resolved I had many hours of enjoyable boating on very economical engines
